Exhaust to reduce both his mobility and damage or to help block his escape (less effective). Your team should focus CC on him, you can also use Lee's ulti to make the betch go away so you guys can regroup. Another effective way is not letting him farm/kill with early ganks (pre-level6 and pre-infinity edge) although if your team ignores him he will get that farm and that sudden damage jump as well.
Exhaust is really effective tho, ignite is more for post-ulti kill insurance

The problem with thornmail is that often squishies build it with no HP to back it up. I mean, lux with thornmail is hillarious, trynda 3 hits, goes away and who cares about thornmail. Even Frozen Heart is better on her (CDR, more armor)
