Do note that an average rune set will cost around 10k-15k gold. However, upon reaching level 20, you'll only have around 60% of your runes unlocked, meaning that you SHOULD be set with 7.8k gold for your preliminary set of runes, and you may want to go ahead buying new champions.

This. I really regret buying only champions for like the longest time.

I started buying mine at level 20, have everything except my fortitude quints at level 27, and i did buy a few 450 champs and 1350's to complete the set of champs, well almost anyhoodles... Time to buy some more RP D: :>
if you want to buy champs, buy champs
champs help you win games so you can get the IP for runes, and help you become versatile with what champs you are good with
buying runes means you're going to want to play with a specific type of champion while at your level to make the most of what you just blew most of your IP on

I'm at level 14 (or so) with about 7800 IP.
My account already has Corki and Rammus, I guess from when I played a bit in beta/initial game. I'd kind of like to add a melee to that - someone like Warwick.
I'm happy to just play free characters at the moment, with the ability to fall back on Corki and Rammus when I feel like it, but if it's not screwing up my ability to buy runes, I'd like to buy Warwick (or a similar character) after his week is up.
