In your example, no.
Then you get one kill, but they get a kill and assist too...
it is OK to die always if you are a tank or support and protecting your carry.
If you are a carry, you generally do not want to die, especially if you are on a streak and have a big bounty on your head, but if there is a situation such as grabbing first blood or killing someone who is legendary or a big threat to your team, but you will die in the process, it is fine.
Simple process of who will benefit more goldwise...and if multiple enemies will benefit from your death or not.
And backdooring too, if you somehow need to die to finish off a tower, if you get the tower but get executed, that is fine as you keep your streak and they don't get any gold.

carries should never die
tanks should die protecting their carries only, otherwise the need to live
supports should never die
only champs who have a legitimate reason to die other than that are karthus or kog'maw. I actually got a triple kill once that way. Killed two, then picked off the third when I died. But you should never TRY to activate their passive.

^not really...
order of importance to live
carries > offtanks > supports = tanks

Here's what happens.
Every kill has something that I've coined "effective gold". If you kill someone, that's kill gold (typically 300). If someone gets an assist, that's EXTRA assist gold. A kill on someone where someone else gets an assist is worth 510 gold, which is kill gold plus assist gold.
Some kills are worth more and some are worth less. First blood is worth 100 more gold than a normal kill. Killing someone on a killing spree is substantially more, while someone on a death spree is much less.
Therefore, if you're a carry and you've got 6 kills and haven't died once, you're worth about 450 gold right now. Killing someone by yourself to net you 300 gold isn't worth it when their team will get that 450 gold plus 315 assist gold.
On the other hand, if you're a tank, and you're 0/5 but you have like 30 assists, and you can take out their legendary Corki who's at low health, by all means, GO FOR IT. You're barely worth anything but you'll get a lot more gold than your death was worth.
Take this game. 5:30. Imaqtpie dives past the enemy team to grab first blood in a level 1 fight. 400 gold. But the enemy team killed her and got assist gold, which is worth 300+175 or 475 gold. So Hotshot says, "Not worth it. Assist gold."
Apart from getting kills, there are scenarios in fights where you basically HAVE to die, and it's a question of what you do with your time alive before you do die. If you deal as much damage as possible and help your team win the resulting team fight before dying, it was a good death. Sometimes you can't prevent it - they've got tons of CC or people who'll just jump on you and you have to just deal as much damage as possible.

If your in a team fight, it is ok to die so long as you did everything you can to help your team. The tanks that use all their spells upfront don't need to run back, unless they can flash out with like 200 hp or something. Generally you don't want to die, but if your like Lux and you unload your spells in a fight, then die, no one is gonna call you on that.
^well some people might
doesn't mean it's right xD

In regards to placing off-tanks about supports, it depends entirely on the champion. If you are Soraka or Sona, you need to stay alive so that you can keep healing and buffing your team consistently. However, if you are a support like Janna or Zilean, who just use all their spells and then poke, an off-tank would rank higher.
There's no "OK to die", no matter the champion u've got.
Imagine this team: Jax, Soraka, Shen, Annie and Udyr.
They got to fight. Shen has to protect his team, but he'll be the last to die (who kills the tank first?), so he has to get the enemy's team attention. The rest has to kill enemies while the tank protect his allies. If the tanker dies, its not OK. Who'll protect your team? Its only worth if you aced or got, at least, 3 enemies.
Theres no "OK death", but "worthy death".
OK death is you go, do any **** and die. You say in the chat: I died. Your teammate says: OK.
Worthy death is when you go, kill 2-3 or more and die. Totally worthy, got 3 with 1 death.

Of course, you probably want to die as little as possible, or, optimally, not die at all. However, when you are presented with an opportunity to "trade" kills with the enemy, when is that OK?
For a theoretical example. Let's say I'm playing Amumu in lane (I know, he should be jungling, but it's a ***** before you have your runes and mastery tree filled). I just hit level 6 and our opponents in lane are MF and some other random carry/suppprt/tank. Now, let's say I'm certain I can kill their MF and damage their other laner by Bandage tossing in with dispair and laying curse and tantrum spamming. However, I know that MF is going to do a ton of damage to me and her ally will kill me. Is this an OK scenario? I get into these sorts of situations allot where I know I can do a ton of damage but I'll die in the process. Is it worth it to give your opponents a kill, but give your ally a strong advantage, and probably a kill and an assist.
That's just one example, but the concept remains the same. When is it OK to willingly get yourself killed? What conditions are worth it? Now, I'm not asking specifically for Amumu. This is across all characters. Is it OK to do it on a tank and not OK on a carry/mage/support or vica versa, etc. Is it OK to die in a tower dive to get the tower down. Is it worth it to suicide for first blood, etc.
Thanks everyone. Peace.
