As for AS/AP Gnar, I don't see why you'd do it. Yes, it has a 100% AP scaling, but that's on the base damage, not the %Max HP damage.
And, adding to that, it runs in the same vein as you don't build full AS Vayne.
Silver Bolts, and by extension, Hyper, don't actually do a whole lot of your damage. The rest of your spells and attacks do.

If you go to the Gnar page, there is a guide written by Aqua Dragon 33 that shows the strengths of AP Gnar... well even though it's really Spell Pen Bruiser Gnar, but it's easier to say "AP Gnar". Search for the guide that says "Hyper Dynamic" and read through it. Also, his smurf ZeaDragon recently got to Platinum by only playing AP Gnar Top, Tank Karthus Mid & AP Marksman Azir Bot. It's definitely viable. And it's credible if you check his stats on op.gg or other sites... or just watch his twitch @ twitch.tv/aquadragon33

Eh, not everyone cares for theorycrafting. Some people just want something that they know should work with the effort put behind it to be mastered. Theorycrafting is a whole other layer of depth to the game most people don't even trifle with. We are the 1% Nickname. The 1%.

how does solo queue not representing a champion's viability well have anything to do with theorycrafting not being important?
Awesome, thanks for all the replies! I did have a chance to try the build out last night, unfortunately I learned I am quite unskilled with Gnar in general, and was faced with playing against a Fizz which threw off my plan of kiting a slow tanky top melee. The early trading definitely scared him though, and I think someone who knows how to play Gnar could very easily pull off a similar build and make the enemy team think twice before engaging.
