Or you could start with a regen bead, pots and wards.
Able to have better vision, some good hp regen and pots.
I'd prefer to have multiple wards and pots instead of the shield.
It's usually a 1st back item, getting it before like 7 is preferred.

I main support, and I think it would be a bad idea. No, I haven't tried it and I don't intend to, as I think it's rather stupid.
Here are some reasons:
1. When I play as support, I want to stay in lane as much as possible to get faster exp/gold
2. I also think warding is very important and 1 ward IS NOT enough. Unless you are playing in a bronze 5 matchup.
3. Since supports are not farming, we have enough issues with gold. So starting with a doran's shield is a waste of gold since you can't upgrade it into something else.

I've been doing D-shield+ward start ever since the Dshield remake.
It actually works, wanna hear why? Because there won't be a bot-lane gank until at least 4-5 minutes - because every jungler and their mother starts bot-buff, and noone level 2 ganks anymore(unless you're me ofc). And i usually kill my lane oppositions before 7-8 minutes into the game with jarvan - so we can back.

After looking a little more into it.
It seems ideal in any bot lane that is looking for an early level 2 engage. The ward is there for safety if you suspect they have a jungler who will gank bot early OR if in the middle of the fight you need to ward the bush to keep vision OR to use it to engage the fight.
Ideally, you want to secure an early kill for your adc then quickly back and come back to lane with a gold advantage.
The 1 ward against a vision ward is not a problem, in fact it is the opposite of that, you might even be able to catch the enemy support out of position by obviously showing them your ward placement and luring them into destroying it.
Tl;DR If you get kill = Good
If you don't = Bad.

Mundo goes where he pleases.
And pleases, where he goes.
Not a good idea at all.
less wards equals to inviting their jungler/mid to gank you. There are like 3 important areas to secure to prevent being ganked.
Unless you are gonna sit thight near your tower in your early start of the game. Even that will not help you from strong pokes coming at you.

Personally, I've found that the most aggresive start is paradoxically, to start with a full ward setup.
2 Sight Ward + 2
Vision Ward + 3
Health Potion.
Along with the biscuit and the
Explorer's Ward, you can effectively control the lane bushes using this setup. For aggresive supports like
Leona I ALWAYS start like this. People get scared when they can't see where you are - for many reasons -. You can't dodge skillshots if you don't know where the enemy is positioned. You can't poke them if you can't see them.
It's also very good for any highly aggresive poke support like
Lulu. She doesn't want get poked back, so she needs concealment from the bushes.
I usually rush
Sightstone, going for a
Ruby Crystal usually in my first trip back. So I don't actually lose much. I don't build Philosopher's Stone every game.

You kill them trying to clear your ward?
