The main problem with Mundo is his early game, not his late game. All his spells cost health n stuff, which makes Mundo suffer quite a bit with his sustain. Once they fix his early game power, you will see Mundo a lot more.

It can be off-set (somewhat) by HP regen quints and Doran's Shield start, can't it?

Doran shield start is decent, but you still cant buy wards n stuff. So basically, it is good if the enemy jungler doesnt gank too much :P
The only way to keep the jungler at distance at that level is with Q anyway, only when you start to get R, you are able to sustain quite well.

I think he will be used more with Spirit Visage and Banshee's Veil. Today I laned vs Garen, even though ignite was annoying I could easily win trades.
With the two said items I could heal back to full hp after trades before Garen's passive even activated. So yeah, Dr. Mundo seems to like the new items.

Mundo already has enough damage, you just need to go full defense. He got the highest base damages in the game.
I would rather start rejuv bead and pots, as this gives the highest amount of sustain possible, also builds into warmog's.
Maybe try out Health Regen Quints? They were used in S2, don't know if that is still accurate.
