The scenario - ganking Top lane at level 3 after a Blue > Wolves > Red > Rift Scuttler start.

You should have an idea where the enemy jungler is based on which of their laners came to lane late. So, if you are mirroring them you can expect them to be right behind you if you have the faster three camp clear or ahead of you waiting in a bush if they have the faster three camp clear.

Case in point. Shyvana vs Hecarim. As Shyvana I tried to pull this off on a Vladimir vs our Camille. There were a fair number of minions and Camille seemed hesistant to start the gank and I needed her CC. I should have waved this off. I didn't. Vlad pooled, I flashed after him. Hecarim showed up and I couldn't get enough distance to get away, so I gave up a kill and an assist and at least Red Buff if not double buffs.

Definitely my bad.

I also hadn't paid attention to where Hecarim had started though my brain did say he should be on that side of the jungle.

Again my bad.

I could have nosed into their Blue buff to see him finishing it off and perhaps tried to steal it though the steal attempt would probably not be that great of an idea since:

A) I had smited Red so I didn't have Smite up for a contest
B) Vladimir had lane priority over Camille
C) Shyvana gets rather low starting Blue buff (Red is a healthier start especially with a leash because Crest of Cinders gives you % max health regeneration when you are out of combat).

I should have been satisfied with getting the Rift Scuttler to protect my Top and Mid laner somewhat from a potential Hecarim gank and possibly just confirming his location though that would also have revealed my position, health, and creep score. I was healthy enough at that point to take Krugs since that would keep me close to Top lane in the event Hecarim did try a gank, but since Camille was shoved into her turret that would have been unlikely, so Raptors would probably have been the ideal choice assuming my Mid laner was actively trading with their Mid laner and/or pushed up in the lane.
