What Does the Vote Bar at the Top of a Guide do?

So in the top right corner of a guide, there is a (generally) green bar that is filled to a certain amount. What I am wondering is what that bar means, does it show + vs. - ? or does it show progress toward some sort of checkpoint? I know this is probably somewhere on the site but I can't seem to find it. Any help is appreciated :).

Hi @ Eggoman :) The bar at the top right of an established guide is a visual representation of how many upvotes a guide has received compared to the downvotes. By established, I mean more than 5 votes. A guide with less than 5 votes has the four green dots that says "RATING PENDING". If the guide is brand new, it will say "NEW BUILD" and show a loading bar (this means it has very little views and no votes at all).

The bar is green when the votes are over ~60% positive. Under ~60% it is yellow. The bar becomes red when it is less than ~40% positive. I struggled to find a guide with a red bar, lol.

I hope this information helps!

Thanks for the reply, that makes a lot of sense but it is kind of sad to realize my guide has had a few downvotes :/. Anyway, I guess that is life. Thank you!

The score bar is based on a Bayesian average of your upvotes and downvotes, not an absolute comparison. That means if your bar is at around 80% and you have 10 votes, that doesn't mean you have 8 upvotes and 2 downvotes.

We use this system because it more accurately judges guides that only have a few votes so far (you need a certain number of upvotes to reach the max score). If we just used a strict ratio of upvotes to downvote, a guide with a single upvote (or 6, if we're not including the Rating Pending guides) would top the charts even though it's only been reviewed by a few people.

So then if my guide has 6 votes and the bar is 80% full there is a high chance all 6 are upvotes?

Sorry for this sort of necroing but...

Does this include also the number of views / number of views during the last X days?
Because I updated a quite old guide that was around 80% of green bar filled, with 35 votes. Right after that update it was displayed in 3rd position.
Now, after a week, I still have 35 votes, but more comments and more views, the bar is around 90% filled and I moved to 2nd position.

Aaaaand another question, just for curiosity, if you know. Was there any change to voting system recently, that dramatically increased the numbers of voters? Because I have 3.2 millions of view and 35 votes, while some new guides have 0.5k views and more than one hundred votes. It feels... strange

Guide sorting is defaulted to prioritize guides from the current patch over older guides, then those guides are sorted by score. If your guide was outdated (not updated in the current patch), that would be why your guide jumped up in the listings.

If your score bar changed without the number of votes changing, it's likely that one of the two is simply being slow to update. Your guide score can't change without votes being placed or deleted. The one fringe case I can imagine is if someone changed their downvote to an upvote. That would increase your score without changing the total number of votes.

A few months ago we introduced Guest voting, which allows site users to vote even if they aren't logged in or registered. Guest scores are calculated separately from Member scores, with the higher of the two scores being displayed. The vote count also matches which score is being used, so if you have 20 member votes and 100 guest votes, it'll show 100 votes if your Guest score is higher or it'll show 20 votes if your Member score is higher.

This is why some guides may show something like 100 votes while other guides only show 20, even if they get roughly the same exposure. In this case, the first guide would be using its Guest score and the second would be using its Member score.

Let me know if that's clear enough or if you have any more questions.

^Is there still a case for separating the votes?

Yes, I knew this, in fact I moved in 3rd position right after my update. And then magically switched to 2nd after a week

I can't check this anymore because I've received a new vote, now, but your explanation works :)

Ok, so I think I still have members score displayed.
How do you prevent multiple votes from the same guest? Are they IP / machine related?
