I don't really understand ranked. All my veteran league player friends are saying that the ranked season is over, but I can still go into ranked queue and play ranked games to get more lp. Can somebody explain how ranked works?

You can play ranked, but again like your friends has mentioned, the season has ended meaning that whatever rank you had is the one you'll end on. This basically is a way for Riot to make it easier to distribute the ranked rewards for the victorious skins for example. You can still go into ranked, but climbing more now won't change the outcome of how you ended this season & the ranks will reset later as well with season 10 coming later after preseason (the one we currently have).

Hopefully that makes sense.
