Well public voting causes people to fight, retaliate and fear down voting. Bad times all around.

Forced commenting, really, doesn't make a difference. The reason people claimed they wanted it was so they could "get more feedback". If someone wants to vote, they'll vote. If someone wants to give feedback, they'll give feedback. You can't force either, trying to do so will either shy people away from voting, or lead to a lot of useless comments. Which it seems has now been proven.

These are the reasons we stated before implementing this system, as to why we put it off for so long. However authors see their scores go up and decide that means it's "working". Often in their minds, all those negative votes that disappeared were definitely trolls and they have now been weeded out.

The site needs happy authors, and the site needs accurate rankings, and the site needs happy readers. If we take away the forced comment/public votes, I feel we will end up with more accurate rankings. It will mean lower scores though, and unhappy authors. If the authors stop writing guides because they are unhappy, we have a problem. If the readers aren't getting proper rankings and are unhappy with the top guides as a result, we have a problem.

Well, most of the users on this site probably like the system and aren't seeing anything past the benefits of "Higher rating on my guide!"

Also, what would we do upon getting rid of the system? Go back to anonymous no-comment voting? Tbh if we make it comment-to-vote but then open voting to guests and anonymous users, all it's going to do is increase the number of comments that are "lol bad" or "don't like it".

That's technically what we want.

"lol bad" votes aren't any worse then "went 13/0/20. Great" votes.

True - but I'm saying that anonymous voting is pointless, and that if we were to get rid of mandatory commenting, we would just go back to the system of no comment required.

Commenting but allowing voting privileges to anonymous users and guests would, again, only increase the influx of written, posted troll votes, which only infuriates the community more - really, there's more *****ing now about bad commenters than before when it was just a ninja downvote.

So there's no real advantage to leaving "comment to vote" on if we're just going to open voting back to the public.

Just to be clear... In my mind...

Guest voting = users that are not logged in can vote.
Public voting = everyone can see what your vote was, but does not imply guest voting.
Anonymous voting = noone can see what your vote was, but does not imply guest voting.

Getting confusing lol...

@Matt:

Yes, Yes, and... I think yes?
Anonymous votes would still have to comment. Be it troll vote, or a real statement. The only thing people can't see is the name of the user.

Let's look at it statistically. I have 2 facts for you.

Fact #1: There are more readers/voters than there are guide-authors.
Fact #2: Not all readers/voters are guide authors, but all guide-authors are readers/voters.

Now, who do you want to appeal to? :P

We have to appeal to everyone. There is a 3 way symbiotic relationship between what we admins want to build/create, what the authors want and what the readers want. Everyone needs the other two groups. Its all about balance, always has been. Things are weighing in too heavy on the authors side now and the user experience is suffering for it.

When i say anonymous voting I mean: Members of mobafire can vote on a guide and no one will ever know what they voted or even the fact that they did. You must be a member and signed in to vote. Basically, the way it was.

I say, put in the Anonymity function, and have this pop up whenever someone tries to publish an "unpublished" guide.

Quoted:

"By publishing this guide, you are agreeing that you understand and accept the possibility of down-votes you disagree with as they are necessary for reinforcing the accuracy of all the guides on MobaFire as well as people's right to their own opinion no matter how different from yours."

[insert check box] I agree.

Fairly neutral statement to make people accept what they dislike, with the reinforced justification that people have a right to their own opinion. :)

If it goes to a vote of what everyone wants I'm going to be voting for removing the C-2-V feature. I'm sick of people expecting their guides to be 100% and QQing when someone downvotes.

@Adonikam:

I still like reading the upvote comments.

Brightens my day everytime I see a new comment and it's an upvote. :/

Downvotes are "mneh, time to reply viciously like the mother bear of all things rational and sensible, and get on with my day."

^Everyone likes upvote comments but they USED to have substance. Now they just say +1, good guide, etc.

Downvotes are now; jjdiw, NOOB, bad build, -1, etc.
