Wait I never use self casting, if you use that, and use the heal, does it auto heal you every time? does it heal an ally if you have your cursor over them?

Self casting is automatically using it on yourself if you can.
Smart casting is casting the spell wherever you have your cursor over. Like Lay Waste or Transcendent Blades' direction.

Smartcast is also very strong on any champion that needs to get off a few select skills in a VERY short amount of time, such as Annie or Veigar's "instagib" combo. It's highly recommended that you have your main initiating skill ( Summon: Tibbers, Event Horizon) on regular cast so you can see its range, however.
