When I first started out, I played the **** out of Vayne. I want to learn how to play Akali (because I'm shallow and I think she's hotter), but even though they seem to be similar in that they are assassin-type characters, I can never get anywhere close to the k/d I had on Vayne.

I usually start out with longsword and pick up an amplifying tome next (to gain both character bonuses). Then I build shoes (usually sorcerer's) and from there go for a rylai's. At this point the game is about over, and I've been money/level starved the whole game so I don't really get an opportunity to build much more than that.

I feel like I'm missing something, but despite trying something different nearly every game, I can't figure out what it is. It also seems frustratingly easy for people to flee from me, despite my shoes and my ability to sprint up to them.

Any ideas? I'd really like to stick with Akali.

Hextech is pretty great on her. I usually rush the revolver and boots then get the Rylai's OR finish the gunblade just before getting Rylai's. I like getting a Guinsoo later on, but early I don't care for it much. Basically, the core is CC boots, Rylai and Hextech. From there it's pretty flexible. Final note, I'm not a huge Akali player or anything, but I've had a fair bit of experience.

The reason you are doing better with Vayne is because, well, Vayne is OP.
Sorry for the short answer, but its pretty true. She gets banned every ranked game ever played since she hit the game.

Yea. Vayne is OP. From what I've picked up around here, Akali is very rune dependent.
Sig courtesy of GrandmasterD. Go get your own sig from them. :D

I wouldn't say Vayne is OP.

Vayne is just worlds easier to play than Akali is.

They are both very different characters.

Vayne offers a lot to a winning team, where as Akali is pretty good if you know what to do with her wether you are winning or losing.

Along with all the other champions...
She does % based auto attack damage...
Tumble...
She needs, and will be eventually, toned down.

You really want runes if you want to play effectively with Akali. Flat AP glyphs/quints and flat AD marks let you start with boots and 3 pots and still get both passive benefits, making you much stronger in lane. Take a look at Westrice's Akali and see how he plays, and I guarantee you'll learn something.

I've seen it. Problem is, I'm lvl 15, so I don't even have access to the runes I need, let alone the kind of cash I'd need to buy them. Is Akali really a lost cause until 30? I'd prefer to hit 30 already knowing how to play her, rather than hitting 30 then learning how to play.

You can still play well with her WITHOUT runes.

They help but not having them won't kill you.

Thanks to TRUeLM, Plastictree, Scrax, Xiaowiriamu, foggy12, JahGFX, jhoijhoi, msrobinson, JEFFY40HANDS, Nyoike, MissMaw, and me :) for the sigs!

Your early game will be suboptimal, but pretty decent anyways.

I'd just play whoever, and learn how to play them, then buy runes when that time comes.
