It was 4, we got the actual numbers in Europe (I think, I was too young to own a SNES).
You still got all the best ones anyway, FF2 + 3 + 5 were fairly average compared with 4 + 6.
Ok since nobody seems anything to have that i count dat visual novels as games too, so:
1. G Senjou no Maou
Its just...i mean the game lets you think(if the Mainchar is it or not im not gonna spoil) that the Mainchar is at the same time the Antagonist, how freakin awesome is that
2. Xenoblade
Im not done with it yet cuz of Disgaea 4 (because gameplay is 9000% more important then a Story when it is a GAME) but as far as i am...just...!!! orly!
3./2. Radiant Historia
well as i said im not done yet with Xenoblade, but Radiant Historia has a epic story too, i never playd Chrono Tiger, im a fanboyhaterfanboy of that game, but ppl say its similiar, so it must be epic? Im to lazy for explanations.

The official English translation of Final Fantasy V began shortly after the release of the Japanese version. The game was to be titled "Final Fantasy III" in North America, but the project fell through.[28] Translator Ted Woolsey explained in a 1994 interview, "[Final Fantasy V is] just not accessible enough to the average gamer".[29] Rumors circulated that a second attempt at localization would be made and that the game would be titled Final Fantasy Extreme, but this attempt was also canceled. A third attempt was made to port the game to Microsoft Windows-based personal computers for North American release by developer Top Dog Software, but this was canceled.[28] Another attempt to port the game to Windows for North America was "handled by Eidos Interactive" circa 1998 (but it is unclear whether this is the same version Top Dog Software was working on or an actual fourth attempt).[30] The continual canceling of the localization angered fans and led to Final Fantasy V becoming one of the first games to receive a complete fan translation.[28]
Quoted:
It was ported by Tose with minor differences to Sony's PlayStation in 1999 and Nintendo's Game Boy Advance in 2006, and it was released for the Wii's Virtual Console in Japan in March 15, 2011, followed by the PAL region on March 18, 2011 and North America on June 30, 2011. The game was known as Final Fantasy III when it was first released in North America, as the original Final Fantasy III had not been released outside of Japan at the time. However, later localizations used the original title.

Care to clarify? I never heard about 3 being 6 in Japan, or 2 being some number else in Japan.
To summarize Square never released FF2, 3 or 5 overseas (not until many years later with PS1 remakes at least), so when they decided to release 4 and 6 on the SNES they just named the overseas versions 2 and 3, thus causing confusion for decades to come.
Remakes and re-releases all have the correct Japanese names as far as I know, this is only for the original SNES versions.

Tactics Ogre was another good one. I played that game several times through in my youth to see a few endings.
Castlevania (Google recommends I change this word to Sandcastle), Symphony of the night was one of those games that stuck with me forever.
Final Fantasy 2 (I dunno, 4 or 5 in Japan? Lol.) This was the original game to me, the game that started my whole love for games.
Zelda, a link to the past. I think mostly for nostalgia.
