But it takes 3 wheat to make one bread which heals only 2.5 hearts.
Melons heal one heart each, and don't require re-planting, only re-tilling the soil for the melon space.
And, once the stem is fully-grown, the farm rate should be faster too.
So, melons are definitely much faster - Thanks for the head's up though. I'm going to go install a basement into my farm for a giant underground field of melons.
Although, I suppose wheat's still handy for animal-farming.
I really wish there was an alternative use for wheat seeds - I have 5 extra stacks, and nothing to do with them. My farm is already growing more then enough wheat.
Perhaps a Seed shooter. :D
Notch should make a wooden tube item you can fire seeds out of - Causing them to deal moderate damafge (like half a heart) but capable of rapid fire like the old bow.
AND, it would be able to fire seeds into tilled soil, for easy planting. :D

i heard its a bug with the melons. thank god.
and no you can farm 6 wheat in the space it takes to make 3 melons, so right now bread > melons.
plus the cost of wood hoes for farmland, because why build any other kind of hoe?

I still think the game needs a seed-shooter.
Wheat farming produces a large excess of seeds. And if realized, the seed-shooter patch should come with a "compactor" which can turn miscellaneous blocks (like gravel, dirt, and cobblestone) into pellets. Maybe make it the official way to turn iron, gold, and diamond into blocks (the '9 ingots into 1 block' thing) too.
