Swain can skip doran rings and go right for ROA, and getting D ring over boots as first item is just madness.
I go boots+3pots->ROA->Sorc->Deathcap->WOTA->Defensive item->Void Staff-Offensive/Defensive item

Two Doran's rings... ew. Yes, I will slow my late game important item builds for those rather small base stats. It's hard enough for me to feel comfortable getting just one as it is. But if it floats your boat, go for it. Seriously though...
...Philosopher's Stone + Blue buff = Perma Ult :) Oh yeah, and don't forget to stack Deathcap's after you get Rylai's awesome slow or Abyssal Mpen.

Stacking Doran's is for a hard lane. There's NOTHING wrong with stacking Doran's.
Would you rather get zoned out and have no farms and damage output, or maintain a steady game from early ~ late?
Stacking Doran's has worked before and is still working lol.
The reasoning is just the same as buying armor in a solo-top lane against hard AD champs, and buying safer items like Wriggles or 2 Dorans / Zeal on an AD carry before rushing a BF sword in a hard lane. You don't save up 1.65k gold when you're getting zoned lol.

1) Doran's Ring > Philo imo. Philo only provides 1g/10 and contains no damage output at all, while with Doran's Rings and your ult you can already sustain a lot...
2) No one ever stacks Deathcaps...

Start boots/3 pots (I've actually had a ton of success with this approach vs mana crystal or dorans.
- Two dorans rings
- Catalyst > RoA
- Then I build either Hextech Revolver or if I want more survivability Giant's Belt > Rylai's
- Rabadons
- Typically Finish WotA
But really, I change every game. Sometimes I build hextech right after RoA, sometimes I don't build it at all.
So really, I'm just curious how you build him? Should I be rushing deathcap more? I know RoA is pretty core, but are there any other "must have" core items I am missing? Any tips are appreciated!
