^ This guy speaks the truth, but I will give you some general supporting advice here still:
A support's role:
- Communicate with your AD carry.
- Lower the minion's health so that the carry can pick them off more easily.
- Stay back and let the carry do the damage.
- Help your carry get kills. (If you get a high damage support, it's worthless, because it's harder to feed your carry. Buy only items which buffs your teammates, and debuffs the enemy).
- "Kill steal" is not a phrase in your vocabulary.
- You want to help, and find pleasure in seeing your teammates rip the enemy to shreds, while you remain supportive.
A hint about helping your carry get minions:
If your lane gets pushed back to your tower, you need to learn how the turret damages minions so that your carry can pick them off. Use one autoattack on each of the caster minions, and ignore attacking the melee minions.
Melee minons can take two turret shots + 1 autoattack from your carry, so leave them alone.
Caster minions can take one turret shot + 2 autoattacks from your carry, so hit them once so that your carry only needs to hit them once too, once the tower focuses the minions.
A very important note: Don't play support if you can't communicate with your teammates!
Cheers!

There is no victory without humility.
Don't be afraid to play aggressive if you are playing heroes like Sona and Alistar, your damage will help out with kills greatly. Also be wary of the enemy creep waves, especially at lower levels, if you go on the offensive and the enemy has more creeps, it's going to hurt.
Here is something that hasn't been said yet.
If your playing Taric + Alistar , don't be scared to be in the middle of a teamfight.
If your playing Soraka + Sona , stay back and play quarterback (football) and control your team from the back.

Different champions support in different ways. Soraka is a heal bot, Sona pumps out auras like a boss, and Janna CC's people to death. (well, near death. You are a support after all) Learning how each champion supports, and building to compliment that, is something that will really help. For example, Soraka benefits insanely from maxed cooldown reduction, whereas Sona needs a ton of mana to keep buffing teammates. Hope this helps!
P.S. Build Shurelya's. Always build Shurelya's.

Thanks to jhoijhoi, albableat, Arcana3, GMD and I for the awesome sigs! im a zombie
- Know your ad carry
- Don't steal their farm, or kill steal them, but you can always kill secure if you think the enemy champ won't die...
- Protect ad carry (
Vayne,
Caitlyn)
- Zone!
- Warding
- Don't rage and focus on harassing the enemy with
Power Chord if you play
Sona, and remember to position your
Crescendo correctly. (Same with
Janna, don't use her
Monsoon on only 1 person unless your like laning and protecting your ad carry or something :3)
For
Soraka ult
Wish, use it when necessary.
Don't use it on yourself unless you are for sure you will live.
- Don't play
Karma, (IMO) because shes a bad support overall. I'd only play her if somebody understands Karma really well, and know how she works? Not saying Karma is bad though shes one of my mains, but compared to the other major supports like
Sona,
Soraka,
Janna, she's more in the category of
Nidalee,
Kayle,
Morgana.
- Stay in the back during team fights, because next thing you know
Akali will kick your face and do her combo. You will most likely die in 0.2 seconds. =D
( I'm not that great of a supporter,
but I guess this is what I learned from supporting and watching streams?)
Doing baron, always shield the person who has agro or heal them.
Unless there's another person about to die..
Also, please please don't go try to "carry" your team with Sona/other supports.
It's stupid because your suppose to be supporting not carrying.
I saw someone do this in ranked game and they lost.

However, I really wanna learn some more advanced "tricks of the trade". So I was wondering if there are any resources y'all could point me to? Like any good things to read? Or what players should I watch stream? Any in particular that are very helpful?
And also, if you have any tricks or tips to share with me, I'd love to hear. One thing I recently started doing is buying oracle's pretty early in the game to sweep for wards. It makes me much more cautious about dying, and i find helps my gameplay. Anyway, any and all advice or things to read are appreciated!
