it was said on the last page. division sign and slash mean the same thing. you can take a division sign and replace it with a slash or take a slash and replace it with a division sign.

You silly fillys, i shall present your tiny human brains the correct answer:

Some stupid people might argue that you can write it with a fractionbar(or whatever bruchstrich means in english), but they forgetz the x(2+1) part doesnt belong under the fraction bar, also for all people that still dont understand it, i suggest visiting a Math Class. But writing Fractionbar instead of / is still right.

It should be 9 if you're following the "multiplication/division from left to right" rule. If you're doing it in w/e order you wont, it's 1.

But it's always brackets first...

Brackets first, and then just from left to right. How hard can it be...

To prove it 100 % :

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/orderops.htm

Quoted:

multiplication and division are at the same rank

Quoted:

When you have a bunch of operations of the same rank, you just operate from left to right.

So the correct answer is 9.

6/2(1+2) needs to be written out clearer...

Could be:

6/(2(1+2)) = 6/(2(3)) = 1

In this case, you will of course do the parenthesis first then multiply then divide the whole thing.

Or:

(6/2)(1+2) = (3)(3) = 9

Left to right, you'll do division first then multiply whatever is in the parenthesis.
Thanks to koksei for sig!

It is clear.

6/2(1+2) ==> 6/2*(1+2)

There are no other parenthesis. So it is NOT 6/(2(1+2)). It can't be. Where are you getting these parenthesis? You can't pull them out of your ***. They weren't in the original equation, so you can't add them later. Stop that.

There is no difference between fractions and division either. They are formats used for the sake of visual clarity. 2/3 is two-thirds and also two divided by three. It's the same thing. It's also 0.333333333333 repeated. 6/2 is a division operation.

The answer is 9. There is no question here. There is no "could be".

Holy **** is this wrong. This is the source of this WHOLE DAMN CONFUSION. If you do the multiplication first, you end up with 1. This is alternatively known as the wrong answer. There would be no need for parenthesis if this was correct. The entire concept behind parenthetical notation was to dictate when you want certain multiplication and division operators to happen first.

You go from left to right, one by one, for each term as you come across them, following the order of operations. Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication and division operands, addition and subtraction operands. Multiplication and division operands are treated equally, as are addition and subtraction operands.
