That's the way I learned it, yep.
Actually I also learned that thing that Nameless wrote, PEMDAS (though in Dutch it is different :P). However that is so old, and was dismissed so long ago...
Now you have to do brackets first, then multiplication/division, then squares/square roots, and then positive or negative addition. From left to right, if you have to choose.

As I said earlier, the answer should be 1, because the / implicates that a fraction is happening. This means that the calculation looks like this (somewhat):
6
/
2 * (2 + 1)
This leads us to:
6
/
6
Which is 1.
Why do I say this? Because in order to follow the whole concept of "left to right", it would have to be this division sign: ÷, and not the /, since the / is another way to show that you are working with a fraction, however without capability of image-wise showing it.

BEDMAS is how I learned it :P
6/2{1+2) = 9
6/2(3)
since you do brackets first
then you can't reduce brackets any further so you just take them out and it ends up
6/2*3
multiplication and division are equal, they go in order of which is first in the equation so you do 6/3 in this case.
So it's
3*3 = 9
:PPP
edit^
That indicates division, not fractions. :P
at least for me, who has no idea how da fak to do the division sign on the computer, and I think that was what the OP meant :c

Alright, my little puppies. Let me shed some more of my God almighty light on this:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110427155042AACb7d8
There you go. Discussion over. The whole first part of the answer is semi-irrelevant, since here, we are looking at / and not ÷. As this teacher with a docterate in mathematics says, / can implicate both "divided by", but it can also imply a fraction.
So actually (I admit my previous answers have been misleading), both answers are correct, simply depending on how you interpret the /. If ÷ had been used, then there would be no exception to the fact that the answer would be 9, because you will normally simply go from left to right, indeed.
/thread
EDIT: How I found out what the answer is (aka both, because it's an unsolvable *****, because / can mean 2 things):
http://funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/3205691/Math+ain+t+even+mad/
Basically an FJ post, where two calculators solve the equation differently, the one getting the answer to be 9, in this case is correct, because these don't work with /, but instead work with ÷, in which case the answer will definitely be 9.

Dunno where the misconception that ÷ and / are different, because they mean exactly the same.
And a fraction is the same as a division.
And a fraction is the same as a division.

Why the hell do they tell you to always do multiplication first if it's not true.
