6/2(1+2) needs to be written out clearer...

It is clear.

6/2(1+2) ==> 6/2*(1+2)

There are no other parenthesis. So it is NOT 6/(2(1+2)). It can't be. Where are you getting these parenthesis? You can't pull them out of your ***. They weren't in the original equation, so you can't add them later. Stop that.

There is no difference between fractions and division either. They are formats used for the sake of visual clarity. 2/3 is two-thirds and also two divided by three. It's the same thing. It's also 0.333333333333 repeated. 6/2 is a division operation.

The answer is 9. There is no question here. There is no "could be".

it actually doesn't matter if you do multiplication or division first btw ...

Holy **** is this wrong. This is the source of this WHOLE DAMN CONFUSION. If you do the multiplication first, you end up with 1. This is alternatively known as the wrong answer. There would be no need for parenthesis if this was correct. The entire concept behind parenthetical notation was to dictate when you want certain multiplication and division operators to happen first.

You go from left to right, one by one, for each term as you come across them, following the order of operations. Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication and division operands, addition and subtraction operands. Multiplication and division operands are treated equally, as are addition and subtraction operands.

MATH;

We have a concrete way to do this; but we're not going to do it that way anymore because now we're advanced!

As an engineering student, the fact that people refuse to learn basic math irritates the piss out of me. Seriously, guys, how many times do people need to shove direct evidence in your face regarding basic operations before you get it?

I mean, if you're trolling, that's one thing. But I don't think more than one or two people actually trolled. I think that these guys are just that bad at math.

As someone more focused on physics, allow me to say that I applaud your attempt to defend mathematics.

And question some of your arithmetic. :)

Also, the answer is 9. For those of you that REALLY think it's 1, you might also be the sort of person that believes in calculators. Try it on your adding machine. Type it into google if you must.
