If you want to build champions outside their role, you should look for scalings.
If a champion scales with something, they can be built in a different direction and outside the box.
A good example for this is AD. Every champion scales with AD through autoattacks, thus you can build every champion as an AD carry and might even get good results with that, but that usually only happens when you get fed on nubs.
If you look at the AD carries, every single one of them has one or more abilities that scale with AD. You can build every champion with a ranged attack and an AD scaling ability as a sucessfull AD carry(Kennen is a good example of that because he just recently got popular as an ad carry and that's thanks to his E and great utility), utility is optimal ofc.
From that, we can conclude that AD Swain is not viable as an AD carry, but that doesn't mean that you can't carry games as AD Swain(You can carry games with everything if your opponents fail).

Same goes with AP, Master Yi, for example, scales excellent with AD through his passive and ult, but has also great AP scalings and is semi-viable as an AP carry.

I'm just going to throw AP Tristana in. Sick burst damage and good laning.

El Psy Congroo.

I tried Hybrid Pantheon, since he has good scaling on his W and R... Didn't work out though, mostly due to him being meelee and the CDs on these abilities being too high ^^.. AD Panth is simply superior. I found it to be somewhat-working when I got Gunblade + Manamune, but that's way late into the game where he should be bursting down people already :/

Shyvana works well with Gunblade - even if her AP scaling is poor, the spellvamp is extremely useful.

Nasus with Last Whisper is a beast (if he can get in range)

Haha, so glad I'm not the only person to play support Veigar.

Dem stuns and burst, such a ridiculous kill lane.

Plus when the AP mid comes to gank you just instagib them.

The best way to play pantheon is as a tank or tanky DPS. Not saying anymore on that subject.

IMHO, though there are set and preferred roles and the metagame, things dont always have to be played that way.

Things are the way they are because its effective. 5s doesnt have to be, AP mid, Support/AD bot, Tank solo-top, and Jungler. Its that way cuz the pros made it effective. That doesnt mean its always right.
