The problem is that you don't understand how it will impact the world. Whatever they choose to do with the internet will barely have any impact since what people will do is host their servers outside the US.
The real problem is the scientific/technological progress that the US was pioneer in a few decades ago is now declining really fast. If nothing is done about that in 50 years the US will become the new middle east: scientifically useless.
