Try getting an early haunting guise, and mobi boots to roam (sorcs work too, I get both but usually mobi =D)
Guise is like super good tho.
Generally don't get dfg until after guise, cap + abyssal; lets your kage season a bit and usually raw damage earlier is a bit better.

I'm shying away from the magic pen stacking build simply because of Kat's base damage nerfs - I play how TnA does, building glass cannon. Straight AP lets me farm better and sacrifices a stronger mid-game with more roam potential for a way stronger and earlier late-game, if that makes sense. Mob boots are interesting but I tend to play heavy farm when I play Kat, generally only roaming if another lane is getting ganked or if my mid left lane to gank.
The thing is, with Kat you can farm heavily and roam. I usually camp bot and still get ~200 cs by 20-25 minutes.
Also, I do straight AP after guise; it is just such a strong early game item.
And her base damage nerfs were only 20 on each. No reason to change a build because of that.
