So.... I'm still kind of new to this whole LoL thing but I've played enough to find a few champs I really love. Foremost among these is Yi (currently running a pretty killer AD build) but so far having watched some tourney videos and keeping an eye on the ranked matches in the corner of the client I don't see him being used. Is there any particular reason ranked/pro players aren't using him? Is there another similar, yet more powerful/better champ I should learn instead?

Melee AD carries haven't been in favor for quite a while. The reason, simply, is that they need to build nothing but damage to be effective, but that leaves them very squishy. And since they cannot stay on the outside of a fight like a ranged AD carry, they tend to just get CC'd and killed without doing any real damage. This is the primary reason that Yi and similar champions ( Tryndamere and Fiora, for instance) are rarely seen in higher-level play. In lower level play, where teams aren't necessarily good at focusing down single targets, these champions can seem significantly more powerful than they are.

If you're interested in learning champions that attack for their damage and build pretty much full damage items, I'd suggest learning some ranged AD carries. They get similarly stompy when they have some items, but are much easier to keep alive. Caitlyn and Miss Fortune are two of the simpler ranged AD carries, in that they primarily want to use autoattacks to do their damage. If you can stand to use a champion that also uses abilities for damage, Graves and Ezreal are also very strong.

Alternatively, you could start playing AP Yi. It's somewhat gimmicky, because if you can't get assists or kills while your ult is on you won't be able to do much damage in teamfights, but it allows Meditate to heal you for stupid amounts of HP and has much better poke than AD Yi does.

Finally, for melee champions that just run a smack train through the enemy team, you might want to try Olaf and Jax. Both have builds and playstyles that are different from Yi's, but are a much stronger champions. Olaf's low CD true damage nukes and complete CC immunity (rather than just slow immunity) are very powerful, and he doesn't really need to build damage to be a huge threat to a team. Jax is one of the best duelists in the game, thanks to his multiple steroids, mixed damage, and his ability to dodge.

God I love people like you. That was probably the most helpful response I ever could have envisioned.... I'm re-reading that again and again to absorb it all. Thanks! I'll be back with some follow up questions soon ;-)

I never really got the point of AP yi. It's incredibly gimmicky relying on getting kills and assists to be of any use in team fights. Excessively disruptive teams can easily cancel meditate leaving him pretty much boned. His laning phase is quite strong with the poke but if they don't feed him early kills its going to be incredibly difficult for him in the mid and late game.

The thing about ap yi though is that he doesn't even need to be fed to carry. It is so easy to farm with master yi, as well as taking wraiths and wolves.

If it required kills to be good, it wouldn't be used in competitive play, because that would be inconsistent.
