So I am brand new. I started playing Saturday new. I am always last to the party. My question is, should I specialize in a few champs or should I still be trying out as many as I can? I love playing Sion and I feel really comfortable with him. I have tried others and I also like Master Yi, Riven, and Katarina. I tried range, Ashe and Miss Fortune, but was owned hard. Any help or suggestions would be awesome.

I think you should start thinking of a role you wanna fill, but still play as many champs as possible, since this allows you to know more about them when you face these champs and it'll help you practice mechanically.

Ok. I like jumping into combat and sacrificing myself to save others. I guess the tank archetype.

You should really just try out all the free champions every week. Even tough you now prefer jumping in you might a different role to suit your style more.
As you describe it you can mainly go top/support/jungle. Try Shen, he can jump in from anywhere too help your team and is a strong pick. As a support try Taric, he can help you save teammates with his heal/stun. And boost your team a lot with his ulti.

Great suggestions! I just finished a game playing Riven a win 9/3/2. I played her really smart and used some of the build found here. It was a lot of fun.

Both. You should specialize in a handful of champions (some people restrict it to 1 or 2, but 5-10 is pretty normal) if you want to improve as a player. You should also be trying out the champions on freeweek when they're available in order to learn more about them and also look for new champions that you're interested in.
Thanks to Jovy for the sig!

Definitely play more champions, but as Falsogod has said, pick the role you want to do the most. You said you like to be tank and jump in and put your life out there for others. Support champions, Jungle, and some solo top champions. I would suggest for top, singed, malphite, and Shen; they are very strong initiators and shens ultimate can be a teamates lifesaver. If you like to be tanky and attack, offtanks like olaf, pantheon, and chogath are good damage dealers.
I can go on and on about this, but look at the champions, look at their stats, abilities and look at different builds... hope this helped :)

Well, I subscribe to the learn to cover your weaknesses school of training. I'd say find a mentor (I'm accepting people on NA, my in game name is necrosslicer), find a champion that runs on your currently weakest points and learn them, or try everyone until you find your niche.
Considering you already kinda have an idea of your achetype I'd practice with those that fit your play style, but the risk there is that your growth may be stunted and you wouldn't necessarily even learn your own role that well (the best junglers have played all other roles and learned what their team mates are capable of, for example. The best ADCs have played support and the best supports have played ADC. The best mids have played top and bottom roles, I could go on for all eternity.). The best advise I can give you (and really anyone) is that this is a team game and you should remember your team-mates strengths and weaknesses when considering who to play.
Now I must really stop rambling like a madman, good luck in your practice.

P.S. Remember that you and no one else knows everything about the game, be open to new ideas and strategies throughout the entirety of your league career and you should do fine.
P.P.S. Don't throw blame around, it will hinder your team more than anything else. Don't be afraid to admit it when you royally screw the pooch, heck, personally when I mess up and admit it my team usually defends me and begins to take responsibility themselves and thusly alter their currently failing strategy and begin to turn the game around (I even began to carry a team from jungler position after dieing to wraiths in the beginning with this sort of teamwork.).
P.P.P.S. The wraith feed was because I had to switch my mid to jungler due to a person in draft three people wanting to take bot after I had called and selected my mid and I didn't have any runes or masteries set up for jungling with that champ. So when they did I swapped to smite and let one of them take the solo lane. I was Akali so once I hit level 6 I was able to assist my team adequately to turn it around.
We were given two ears to listen to others, one mouth to ask question, and two eyes to see the answers for ourselves. Those questions you ask are useless though without another to answer, and you must answer others if you are to expect them to impart the same kindness to you. Be truthful in your answers, then know that one speaks the truth; and be never afraid to test the answers of others so that you may know of more. And most importantly, always be kind to your fellow man, no matter their origin, their company or their creed; because kindness gives hope, not only to those you show kindness for, not only to one's own self, but to the world; and hope can nurture, redeem, or even save the lives of many.

The answer is simple:

Main a champion or 2, and play multiple other champions.

By focussing your attention towards just 2 champions, you will be able to grow your skill much easier than when you have to keep your attention towards multiple champions.

But why should you play other champions anyway?
This way you:
* Explore more champions. This way you can find other champions in the game you like, maybe a new main.
* Understand the champion abilities. If you understand the abilities of a champion, it is easier to cooperate or defeat the champion when someone else plays him than you.
* Have more variety. If you keep playing the same champion over and over again, it might get boring, and it is nice to have something else for a change.

So play one or 2 champions on an average scale to get more in-depth.
More champions on an average scale to get more broad :D

Good luck
Change is gooooood

I've been having the same issue, I got Nasus, loved him, but wanted something faster, so I got Jax, did good with him but wasn't doing as good as nasus, then I went to twisted fate, not my style,
Now I'm on Pantheon, which I love & I do solo mid & I can get him leveled quick & easy.
