I always remember because I practised them for combo's.
Something like:
* Morgana ultimate +
Zhonya's Hourglass
* Backdoor Yi + Youmuu's Ghostblade
* Urgot Q + Muramana
Etc.
By practicing these kind of combo's you will get used to the item actives.

I still find myself forgetting items all the time but what I have tried to do is start with as little items as possible and practice using them as much as possible. Than slowly moved up to more and more usable items...as a support heavy player the item use stuff is pretty intense. Just keep practicing and trying to remind yourself that you have usable items I guess :/ practice, practice, and more practice.

try mapping the keybinds of the actives near your other abilities (this works easier with multibutton gaming mouses.) act as if the active item is an extension of your characters innate abilities. Deathfire Grasp is just another ability I have to nuke with. Zhonya's Hourglass is just another ability I have to defend myself. Blade of the Ruined King is just another ability I have to slow people and heal myself.
And so on, just treat the actives as if you always have another ability to use.

always use the same item types in the same slot... for example: i always have my damage item on 2 and my defensive item on one.
so if i am ap mid and i have a Deathfire i have it on two and if i am jax and have a hextech i also have it on slot 2
and my zonya's and say my randuins all go in slot one so regardless of who i am using i am pressing 1 for defensive and 2 for offensive.....mind you i still forget like half the time

Yet still there are many times I forget, and afterwards I'm kuje "****, I would've survived and killed him had I used that item". How do you guys remember?
