Do you think being able to control a guide's blurb is a good idea?

^ Instead of the system just drawing the first paragraph or so from the guide itself, could we have a "blurb" input section? I feel that if guide authors are able to write a little blurb directed at browsing members, users potentially could "ignore" higher-rated guides if the blurb isn't as good as someone with a lower percent.

Similar to a book store, I believe this would create a more level playing field. It also gives author's the chance to distinguish their guide from the very get go - guide titles can only be so dissimilar before they become "weird".

Thoughts?

The "Add Blurb" tab would probably be somewhere prominent, and it'd have a character limit. It'd mean authors would have to be succinct with their summarisation. Virtually, it'd add a fresh dimension to guide browsing. Just imagine if you had to choose which movie to watch at the cinemas only due to seeing the first 30 seconds without first getting to read the blurb on the timetable sheet, or getting to watch the specifically designed trailer.

You can't get an accurate glimpse of the whole product by only reading the first few lines of a guide, and I think blurbs would be a nice way to individualise guides on the browsing pages ^^

I like the idea. Although the first paragraph of my guide is actually pretty enticing to get people to check it out ^^

I guess I felt like hardly anyone looks at the blurb anyways since it's a mouseover and most people would just click on the guide. It seemed to me like it wasn't worth the effort.
Thanks to Minho for my sig!

Where's your data for that though? If no one used a mouseover, why does it exist? It exists because some people do use it, or "accidentally" discover it when looking at guides. If users were given the option to summarise their guide into around 50 words, they have more chance of getting their guide read if the reader likes what they read.

Like explained in the OP, it's an advertisement. If that shampoo looks great (build, masteries), but you read the back and it contained ingredients you didn't like (poor grammar/spelling, guide covers TT, person is level 2 etc), you won't buy it and get stuck with a shampoo you wouldn't have bought if you had known better.

Maybe to you it didn't seem worth the effort, okay. But did you ask the designers what they thought?

Do you think guide summaries are going to differ greatly? How do you summarize a guide in 50 words? How would a 50 word summary greatly benefit guide browsers?

"This guide will teach you how to play this champ. It has lots of good information. It is for x role."

Things that they do point out is different about their guide can probably be ascertained from the guide preview / title.

Obviously limitless. The point isn't that "oh, every blurb will contain x, y, and z", it's that just that SMALL snippet of the blurb will tell you how the author writes and what they think is important.

That's the challenge! Is it really a challenge? I just wrote the beginning to a whole lot of blurbs (which was really fun, by the way). What it comes down to is creativity. Blurbs will separate the creative from the uncreative. People who write guides are naturally creative; they created a guide! This is a chance to advertise your guide, BEYOND what you see in the guide preview (ranked status, score, "core build"). For instance, if the Minnesota guide was in 5th place, but I read the blurb, I'd definitely read it, because I know it's going to be humorous.

It allows other writers to have the chance at catching the reader's eye. It also allows browsers to check the content of the guide before they read it. A good summary would tell you what the guide will cover, so the browser can tell whether the guide is for them. If I was looking for a Dominion Warwick guide, but didn't know how to use the filters/didn't know there WERE search filters, blurbs would help me.

Does that tell you my guide is written for Jungle Warwick, SR and TT? If you were new to the game, would you know Smite is for jungling only? (500 DAMAGE! WOW! I can kill a champion with that!) Does my title tell you what the guide will be about? etc etc etc

Guides, like books, don't reveal the entire content via the title. "Harry Potter finds out he is a magical being and attends a high school for witches and wizards and befriends Hermione and Ron to defeat an evil presence by the name of You-Know-Who by preventing You-Know-Who from getting his hands on the Philosopher's Stone" is a far less catchy title than "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". That first "title" would be much better off as a blurb ^^

As an avid reader of books, I am attracted by the cover art and title (guide preview/title). But before I buy the book, I read the blurb (mouseover). Unless I'm the only one to do this, I think it'd be a benefit. I know it's a "big" request for something that could be considered asinine, but I think it'd add a unique dimension to MobaFire.

Last point. The mouseover thing already exists. How hard would it be to ensure the mouseover thing draws text from a special chapter box that has a character/word limit titled "Blurb"? EDIT. You know. This already exists for Wiki Articles. WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY. So. A question for the devteam. How hard would it be to incorporate coding that already exists, for this blurb purpose for guides?

I put it in our idea list which Matt looks at, so you would just have to wait to see if anything ever happens with it. They didn't mention anything to me about doing it, so they may not have the time or may do it at a later date.
Thanks to GrandMasterD for my sig!
