I used to smartcast everything until I started playing DotA. That forced me to stop smart casting and increased my precision and speed with normal casting. Nowadays, my smartcasting decisions are less a case of 'what' and more a case of 'when'. If my mouse is already in position, obviously I will smart cast it, but if it is not, then I usually normal cast because it takes just as much time but gives me more precision. The ability is activated while moving the mouse so doesn't delay the action, thus the normal cast is delayed by mouse movement and the final click, just like smartcasting.
Thus, most of normal casting occurs with harassment in lane and most of my smart-casting occurs in combos (I might normal cast
Light Binding, but the rest of my
Lux combo is smart-casted) and when an opponent is right in my face. Basically, it is a decision between precision casting and clutch casting for me.

The only skill I smartcast is
Poison Trail because if you smartcast and selfcast it at the same time, you will not see it. It is also only active for like 0.1 seconds, so you just loose 1 times mana, making this effective for jungling or safe farming.

I smartcast everything because sometimes you need to make clutch moves/decisions and you just don't have the time to adjust and click. Not smartcasting spells also stops me from predicting my enemy's movements because the blue aim line is not really accurate concerning max range and range width on certain spells (Ex: Zyra's E).
