They didn't just shoot themselves in the foot, they blew it clean off and they're about to start limping around.
Oh, Microsoft was actually first. They just failed miserably and probably abandoned the idea completely.
from 2005 or so
sounds like a nice little article I read awhile back about piracy and how to deal with it eh tosh and searz?
Indeed. I hope you've read my wall of text towards the end of that. Lots of good stuff if I remember correctly.
Let's make 'Xbox Lastone' a thing, lol.

in any case. microsoft can kiss its console/game development department goodbye because they probably lost 90% of their consumers with this move. if they had ONE gamer in their development team they would have known better than to make this junk. RIP xbox.

Google has a job title called "Head of Black Community Engagement"..
I don't know whether to cry or laugh.. or both.

The specs for the GPU in Xbox Lastone are finally out. (RAM is important since the GPU will use the RAM too)
Xbox Lastone:
GPU: AMD Radeon HD
12 CU, 1,23 TFLOPs
768 SP
DX11.1
RAM:
8 GB DDR3, 68 GB/s bandwidth
256-bit, 2 133 MHz
32 MB SRAM, 102 GB/s bandwidth
PS4:
AMD Radeon HD
18 CU, 1,84 TFLOPs
1152 SP
DX11.1
RAM:
8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s bandwidth
256-bit, 5,5 GHz
10 MB eDRAM, 32 GB/s bandwidth
In essence we could assume that the PS4 will be roughly 33% more powerful in the GPU department. (the CPU will be exactly the same on both though)
One fun thing to note is that the they use exactly opposite RAM to each other.
DDR3 has reasonably high bandwidth and low latency. GDDR5 has very high bandwidth, but higher latency.
Low latency is important to the CPU, while high bandwidth is important to the GPU.
And they're both trying to cover their own shortcomings by adding another small memory chip with the opposite function.
The PS4 solution does seem like the more elegant one though, since the CPU generally doesn't need as much space in RAM as the GPU.

I am trying to formulate some reason as to why I found this presentation much more underwhelming than the PS4's... but I am drawing a blank. Maybe because PS4 was first? idunno.

In this case, Microsoft intended to preemptively prevent copyright infrigement, making somehow look that users will be heavilly spied on. ofc, no one wants that.
