Got enough damage? Get more defenses
Got enough defenses? Get more damage
It all comes to the type of champion you're playing.

Gave you a good laugh or helped? rep+ so i can know ;)
Thanks to TinyStar, Jhoi, Xiaowi, Virus, Bard and Arcana(eww)...for my signatures!
Elohell is like Irelia's stun: if your real level is equal or lower than the level you are in, you're STUNNED there forever. If your actual level is higher than the level you are in, you're just SLOWED in your way up.
Heres my Shyvana guide! I will dance in their ashes
Do what fulfills your role in the team?
Thank you jhoijhoi, Keondre, LaCorpse, The_Nameless_Bard, Arcana3, Apfeljack, Hogopogo, eddie199, Xiaowiriamu, and JEFFY40HANDS for the spectacular sigs!
I'll get fed as Talon once in awhile (especially against Annie), and I'll perform a hybrid. I'll defend the hell out of my lane and push whenever viable because when I'm fed it's usually around mid-game and my Rake is beast mode. I'll also go offense to gank top and bot here and there. It really depends on your lane, your champion, and how much you are fed. The more you're fed I'd say go offense.

NO WAY! You be a man and build those AD items or whatever. :3
Thanks to Jovy for the sig!

I think you missed the OP's actual question. This is about itemization, not play style or game plan.
Thanks to Nyoike for the sig!

I didn't mean to confuse anyone, I was still talking about itemization. I like to sell and re-purchase items throughout the game.
As I said before, when fed I like to build both. Since Talon is squishy and still reliant on damage output, I'll build hybrid items such as Hexdrinker (eventually into Maw of Malmortius) or maybe an item with good armor or health benefits.

I think it really depends on how the rest of your teammates are doing.
If you're fed but you see some of your teammates having trouble in their lanes (i.e. feeding, underfarmed), help them out whenever you can by building tanky items when ganking for them.
Also, items like phage, iceborn, rylais, etc. would definitely be a plus because it provides tankiness and movement speed reduction.
If you're losing your lane, lean more towards a tanky support.
Just build beefy items and when during teamfights, peel for the carry. If you can't get kills from your enemy laner, you have a lower chance of killing anyone else, even the enemy support. Some games when I'm doing really bad, I decide to trade my items to become a complete meat shield and become a nuisance to the enemy team.

^Tbh this is 100% incorrect. If you're fed you need to snowball. If you're behind you should go tanky. Not the other way around

The best way for a Zac to make an influence when being fed is by being incredibly tanky while dealing good sustained damage (an early Sunfire Aegis vs an AD top, for example, is great), the best way for a Lee Sin top would be to build offensively and snowball harder.
Top is the only lane where you have this dilemma though, imo. I'd say for mid you should always take damage (why bother getting fed if you're going to waste it on tanky items and not deal damage as the AP Carry), for AD you should always take damage (as opposed to doing something "tanky" like stacking Doran's Blades; I know it's not quite the same as choosing between a Giant's Belt and a B. F. Sword, but let's face it, why would you ever go for items like a Giant's Belt on AD early) and for support you should generally take tankiness / aura items (basically just get your general build faster).
Edit: Oh right I forgot jungling. Eeeh generally I'd say stick to tanky builds, just get an earlier Locket of the Iron Solari or w/e. I don't know, going for carry builds on junglers is kinda iffy imo.
