So, I've gotten to where I am playing well with Kassadin in laning phase and mid-game where I can catch people and nuke them, but I'm struggling with my positioning in late game team fights. Any advice as to what I should be doing, how I should be doing it, etc? I feel like my best idea is to try and get around their team and nuke the carries, but I struggle to do that. Would love for someone more experienced to give me some advice on what to work on or to aim for.

You're gonna be focused no matter what.

Situation #1: you are carrying. Stay in the back until CC's and ultis have been blown then go in for the kills, always trying to catch AD/AP carry first. If you can't get to them, try to kill whoever is closest.

Situation #2: the ADC is carrying. Stay close to the ADC and peel.

Situation #3: your whole team is doing bad. Act like an ADC.

If you're comfortable riftwalking all over, you can also initiate if you think you can kill someone and riftwalk back in time before others get to you. This is insanely risky and is better done if you have zhonya's and flash as backup.

At the end of the day however, lesson is kill whoever is closest.

As a kassadin player you need to evaluate a team around the start of a game.

Huge AOE hard cc? dont be anywhere near your frontline

Ability to disable you quickly? ( Dazzle, Whimsy) hang back Wait to see of they blow it on the frontline

And then there are the stuff like fed X or Y

Fed APC? Null Sphere

Fed ADC? Full combo ->zhonyahs

stuff like that made me a better kass player

If you aren't fed, stay in the back to peel for your ADC.

If you're fed, Rift in and 1 shot their ADC, Zhonyas, Rift out. Rinse and repeat.

1. Don't be the first one in.

2. If the enemy team blows cooldowns and you feel safe enough, rift into range of the enemy AD carry and use your spells.

3. If you don't feel safe, walk up to a squishy target if you can, use Q and E and rift out before anyone can hit you.

Other than that you just have to practice basic team fight positioning for mages. Zhonya's can buy you enough time to escape if you jump in and start getting focused. If you don't have zhonya's, make sure you go in at the right time. It's a lot like playing any AP assassin like Katarina or Akali, except you can actually play safer if you need to by saving your riftwalk to escape if you can't jump into the fight yet.

You pretty much can't initiate fights so don't try to. You can make picks and you can catch people if the enemy team is out of position. Rifting into range and using Q-E on someone can slow them enough for your team to force a fight sometimes, but that's as close as you get.

Can't really say much more without seeing one of your games.
Thanks to Minho for the sig!

the best way to make up for inferior positioning is to buy zhonyas; and even if your positioning is amazing, zhonyas allows for insane teamfightplays.

Try to pick carries that are lacking behind their team or clean up after cc is blown. If neither is possible, try to peel for your adc and keep your eyes open. Zhonyas allows you to dive in for a combo and then blink out again without getting killed and even bait essential cc.

Try to keep the game in laning/skirmishing phase so you can dominate with your superior mobility by giving your side the numbers advantage in no time.

After mastering the skirmishes it becomes increasingly easier to recognize good opportunities in fights.
what im saying here is: the lower the number of fighters, the easier the spots are to pick; master the lower numbers -> teamfightawareness

I don't usually struggle with positioning in smaller skirmishes, it's the bigger ones where I struggle. Thanks for the info guys. I'll try to practice it some more. I think I just need to focus more on getting around the enemy team and diving whichever carry is more fed.
