My general rule of thumb has always been:
BT rush if infront because penta potential with dat lifesteal
IE rush if behind so you still deal damage.

Kinda off-topic but then again not. How do you guys build urgot in the bot-lane?

It's actually the opposite. Infinity Edge is a better item to build in most auto-attack based champions if you're winning, but Bloodthirster is the safer build-path.

But if you're behind and build a bloodthirster, you're useless :-/

Correct. BT is more of a snowball item because when you have that item fully stacked and your enemy has only a BF sword, you are THAT much stronger. On the other hand, if you are super far ahead you can get IE just because it is that strong and you won't be hurt much by the mid game drop in power.

Infinity Edge costs 600 gold more and it doesnt really kick in before you built Phantom Dancer. While Bloodthirster by itself gives you more damage scaling and also sustain.

It isnt very hard to stack, you only lose half the stacks on death.

Also its much easier to build since you always want a Vampiric Scepter in the earlygame.

I'd only build Infinity Edge first if I were to be playing an ADC with low scalings and very AA dependant like Tristana or Ashe.

Also, assuming that you guys both have one of these items finished (one has IE and you have BT), whoever wields the BT will win the trade because he will lifesteal more than his opponent (even assuming both have LS runes). 20% LS beats 3%, that's basic math. And yes, you could go Vamp before IE, but we're talking about two items now and the total cost now ascends to 4600 gold. Even more reason to get Bloodthirster first if you're not playing a hypercarry.

As I pointed out before, Infinity Edge is a really good standalone item and you're heavily underestimating the power of the item. In a caitlyn vs caitlyn (hypothetically speaking), the caitlyn who got an infinity edge would win against the caitlyn who has the BT+random 500g item. The lifesteal doesn't weigh up to the HUGE increase in damage. You only need one or two crits to outdamage the other completely.

Yes, you win trades based off the sustain, but assuming the other AD runs lifesteal quints and has a few potions, that effect will be nullified compared to the damage increase.

Cait - BT Shiv for fast push, IE PD for teamfights
Varus - BT LW IE for ad caster esque burst, BOTRK IE for AA on hit damage
Graves - BT LW IE for ad caster esque burst, BT Shiv / PD otherwise

I don't know if it's me who's being extremely biased but Infinity Edge doesn't give you a huge damage increase by itself, it's like a Rabadon's Deathcap for AD Carries. The item becomes more powerful the more you build, because it has natural synergy with other stats (Attack Speed, Critical Chance, Attack Damage, Armor Penetration).

As a rush per se I've performed better when I got Bloodthirster. I think that you're vastly overestimating the amount of Crit chance you get with IE and % LS percentage from runes (with Bloodthirster you will heal 1/5 of your total AA damage). Also that 1400 (600 + 800) gold extra you need to actually compete with Bloodthirster isn't a "small advantage" , we're talking basically around 4 extra kills, gold-worth or a huge CS gap (about 40 CS I believe) between both botlaners.

I had the actual numbers somewhere, I'll check once I get back home.

If you're behind on an ad-carry you won't be getting bt before 20 minutes into the game and teamfights will happen shortly, ie deals more damage especially compared to a unstacked bt.
