Can't really compare Xin and J4.
Their mechanics aren't the same and the plays you can make with either isn't the same.
I mean the biggest give away that they aren't the same is their R. The one is the complete opposite of the other.
I disagree with this, but Lasty can probably give better insight than I can. To me, they are VERY easy to compare. They both bring VERY high-impact, high-cc, high-damage early ganks, complete with a gap closer, a slow, and a knockup for each. Sounds pretty similar.
Their build paths are also pretty similar. Granted, I don't play Xin, but I doubt that golem > triforce is the way to play him. MAYBE if you're snowballing out of control, but in real games, I would expect to focus (just like J4) on item's like Locket, Randuin's, and Visage. Probably look to a brutalizer if you are looking for an offensive item early.
And finally, their ults are not "complete opposites of each other". Granted, I guess your point is one keeps enemies in, one knocks them out. But look at what each ult accomplishes. What do you do with J4's ult: Useful for initiation, has pick potential, useful as a zoning tool, and capable of burst as well. Now Xin Zhao's ult: Useful for initiation, has pick potential, can be used to zone teams away while focusing a high priority target, and capable of burst as well.
Better players than me can correct me, but they seem VERY similar to me. I imagine the reason people would say J4 is better is because Xin NEEDS those early ganks to be successful, needs to snowball a little bit, whereas JArvan will always be useful. Also, J4's kit just has more utility (AoE knockup, AoE slow, shield) than Xin's single-target focus.
Xin is a riskier version of Jarvan. He does a little bit more damage but he really has no way of disengaging from a fight if things go bad. J4 has a lot more lockdown than Xin does so thats why you see way more J4 in competitive play than you do Xin.
You definitely don't want to be building Triforce on Jungle Xin. It's far too expensive and he's served just as well by a Brutalizer. Build him tank or you'll melt when you dive the enemy teams back line.

I need to relisten to the podcast. Elise is my new pet project so I am going to have to listen to the elise section. Great work once again. Lasty and Bil should have the title professor of jungling.
