Although this is a bit off topic, I've always wondered and still do wonder what the point of being a vegetarian is, since at least one person here has some experience with it, I would appreciate some insight. I always assumed it was because the person refused to eat animal meat, but then wouldn't eating eggs be off limits/at least hypocritical? I mean, they're basically animals. Or is it just that people want to be healthier (meat is healthy though)/ want to, like, lose weight or something?

The thing with eggs is that the eggs you purchase in a store cannot become a live animal, they are not fertilized and they'll stay in the exact state they're in regardless of whether you eat them or not. I don't drink milk because I'm lactose intolerant and I didn't change that when I was a vegetarian. If you have issues with animal cruelty and that's why you want to be a vegetarian I would suggest veganism is more your thing.

I was a vegetarian because I was dating someone who was and it was easier to just be a vegetarian since I was the one cooking the food anyways. Now he was a vegetarian because he had decided he was going to be a Buddhist (he was terrible at it, plus it was just him being contrary to his parents). If I hadn't forced him to eat healthily he would have eaten nothing but raw spinach and tofu....oh and a **** ton of junk food and soda.

Another reason to be a veggy is because its super environmental friendly. Farming animals take a lot more resources and produce a lot more waste than farming plants :3

I'm not a veggy tho, meat is too delicious ;_;
Change is gooooood

^Also true. However most people jumping on the "meat is bad and mean to animals" bandwagon are doing just that. Right up there with this gluten free craze that's been going around. Gluten free diets can help some people with specific problems that are caused or exacerbated by Gluten (Celiac disease, some cases of Crohn's Disease), but for the most part cutting gluten won't do **** for you that just cutting highly processed starches in general wouldn't do.

With proper knowledge and understanding it doesn't really affect your growth (width or length)

These five centimetres left wouldn't bother me ... but I agree on it even though I think for me it's about how much meat people are eating in comparison to what they actually "need" to eat. We waste so much food and medicine into growing some animals just because meat has become a "normal" kind of food.
Thanks to Ubnoxius for this sig!

^agreed. Outside of western society protein is usually eaten in much smaller portions.

This is very true. The only way you're going to have issues is if you can't be bothered to make sure you're getting the nutrients you need.

My girlfriend is vetegatian just because her parents were vegetarians during her youth. She doesn't really care too much about animal welfare, environmental reasons or anything like that, it's just that she got used to not-eating meat so she never even came to like meat.
