10.16 Updated Sylas Mid Guide

By Nooldles
Hey guys I am currently a D3 mid player who mains Sylas with around 300 games played on him. I play on the EUW server and will start streaming soon so if you want to check me out my Twitch stream is:
If you have any questions about Sylas or even the game in general if you're a beginner to league, I'd be happy to answer any questions on my stream or message me on mobafire :)
If you want to me it is:
At the time of creating the guide I have a 57% winrate on him in 300 games in D3 elo but that could change soon? (PogChamp or MonkaS)
Early game and laning phase (Pre proto-belt)
During the laning phase in most matchups your playing more to survive and farm as best as you can as Sylas' laning phase is his weakest point. Only if the enemy takes very bad trades or you are playing against a champion with an even weaker early game like Kassadin do you look for solo kills pre first back. If you have control of the wave, ideally you want to push the first 2 waves into the enemy mid's turret and then ward. If you are in a rough matchup and they control the wave let them push the first 2 waves into your turret, csing as well as you can, and rush level 3 off of the 3rd wave. Because the turret speeds up your level 3 you can potentially all in the opponent if they make a mistep as Sylas' level 3 is quite potent. Once you get hextech revolver, your kill threat is much higher and especially when you get 6 (depending on the enemy champions) there are windows of opportunity where solo killing is very possible. At the end of the day Sylas' playstyle is similiar to Kassadin's in the sense that you have to be patient and play for your powerspikes. Sylas differs as he spikes much quicker than Kassadin but has a weaker late late game. Just remember to be patient with Sylas as his mid game is very strong especially in the hands of a worthy player.
Early-mid game (Post proto-belt)
Once you get Hextech Proto-belt, you are a different beast. This is the point in the game where you aren't just the opponent's prisoner (pun intended). You will have agency in the lane, whether it comes from the ability to control the waves by osing them when your proto-belt is off cooldown and getting wards or roaming while your opponent is farming under tower, or by having actual kill threat due to the active and the raw stats proto-belt offers for its price. If you and the enemy mid are similiar cs, same KDA and doesn't build proto then you will spike harder much earlier than them. In this window you must abuse you are stronger than them.
General playstyle
One of Sylas' main advantages is that he is very flexible due to having multiple choices of ultimates. He can be your engage by stealing Ornn R, Fiddlesticks R, Ashe R, Malphite R or Gnar R. Can be the tank to buy some time and allow your carries to pop off by stealing Alistar R or Swain R. Can also steal dueling ults like Zed R, Mordekaiser R or Tryndamere R to be a massive threat in a side lane. He really can do anything man. Sylas also favors a more aggressive style of play which is amazing for learning the game in the long run as it facilitates a carrying mentality which is perfect for solo queue. It also forces you to be in scenarios where you must know the limit of your champion which if you put the time in to this champion means you will be rewarded heavily.
Sylas has Top Lane Potential
Even when autofilled I pick Sylas top lane because of my confidence to play basically all matchups. I feel top lane because of the champions that play there, mostly bruisers and tanks, there is a lot of potential. Most of the bruiser champions like Fiora, Jax and Tryndamere are skill matchups where honestly it is the better player that wins. Obviously late game, unless you're fed they win in the side lane as their champ is built for that. However in tank matchups like Ornn and Maokai, they can never kill you because of your sheer sustain with maxed out W, but you can easily run them down as top lane is a longer lane than mid which allows for potential to chase. Overall, if you're confident in your Sylas play, Sylas top is also very good especially in those tank mathups. There have also been some higher elo Sylas players going Omnistone which I haven't personally tried but sounds quite good, with Lethal Tempo being the only rune that doesn't synergise well with his kit.
New Fleetfootwork rune page
This rune started being used by Faker just as a test since Conqueror had been nerfed. Turns out Fleetfootwork is so good on Sylas and is probably the best and most reliable keystone on Sylas. It allows him to survive early game, especially in hard matchups. It's really that simple on why it's his keystone choice. "Advanced" mechanics you can use is to utilize the movement speed from hitting a minion with fleetfootwork and use it to get in range of your W as a form of engage rather than your E.
Resolve Secondary
Resolve secondary feels really nice in very specific matchups. If you go Resolve secondary always take Revitalize as it synergizes very well with Sylas' W. Second Wind is taken against hard poke mages that bully you in the early game such as: Xerath, Orianna, Syndra and Velkoz. If against burst assassins like: Zed, Ekko, Fizz and Talon take Bone Plating as it can be the difference between life and death when they all in especially if they don't take into consideration the Bone Plating Cooldown prior to engaging.
Overall, I just think Sylas' aggressive playstyle paired with his flexibility and therefore his ability to outplay makes him an awesome champion to learn and to climb with. He is also, to my experience at least, not banned or picked very often which is a plus for solo queue.
And remember if you have any questions don't be afraid to message me on mobafire or on my Twitch stream ( if I am streaming. I'd love to hear how maybe some of you have read this guide and it has helped you climb on Sylas or if you disagree with some of the points I have made and we can have a friendly discussion on Sylas' strengths and weaknesses. Thanks for reading :D
