Gets harder as the game goes on. Blue Smite + Mercs always
Cho'Gath
Udyr Chogath Hentai mmmmmmm. Invade this guy over and over
Dr. Mundo
Cancer Slows, so be careful once he gets armor. Early game you can melt him though, so try to get early invades off.
Elise
A good Elise will dump on Udyr. However, most Elise players struggle with positioning (aka if you're below Diamond, feel free to invade her). If you are diamond, then hope she messes up, otherwise you're gonna have a rough time
Evelynn
Just invade her pre 6 and bully her. Past 6 be really careful- this bitch hurts. Hexdrinker reccomended vs her
Ezreal
I consider this a really easy matchup, but a new Udyr will struggle vs this guy in the jungle. Just avoid kiting and you're guchi
Fiddlesticks
Fear is his only escape. Invade this guy 24/7. Btw yur bear interupts his drain, so make sure to save the slap for when the drain starts
Gragas
lol tiger likes scratching fat belly. Be careful with teamfights/skirmishes though- a good Gragas can nullify Udyr with all his cc
Graves
The Graves that cannot kite is fresh tiger meat. If he can kite, then this matchup is semi-difficult
Hecarim
Most hecarims take ghost so just flash kill level 3. Try to countergank him, but in season 9's spam gank meta hecarim is very hard to keep track of.
Ivern
FUCK THIS GUY- always takes your buffs and is hella hard to kill. Make sure to do a buff to buff clear and try and out jungle him early. This matchup is a fucking headache
Jarvan IV
invade invade invade. Once j4 uses his combo to start a jungle camp, he has no escape- run em down baby. Try not to let him land eq combo and its freelo
Jax
yikers- try to kite out the e. Don't recommend playing tiger into this guy unless you know the matchup really well
Kayn
Pre-6 you'll shit on him. Blue kayn you also shit on. However, if he goes red kayn, good luck. If you don't have a lead by the time he becomes red kayn, you're fucked
Kha'Zix
broken ass champ. Red smite + Ninja tabi are a must for this guy. Good luck lul
Kindred
Hardest matchup for Udyr. A good Kindred player will make a laughing stock of you
Lee Sin
This guy is easy for me, but a lot of low elo players will struggle vs. this guy. You should always be able to 1v1 him, unless you get outplayed
Maokai
a living meme. just invade him lol
Master Yi
Red smite + ninja tabi. Youll dumpster him until 5/6 items, then he outscales you
Nidalee
Very hard for the first 10 minutes of the game. Avoid spears and traps, but past 10 minutes Udyr is very strong vs nidalee
Nocturne
DO NOT 1v1 this guy, ever. Does insane damage early game. My best advice is to go ninja tabi + red smite and try to countergank him- he sucks in 2v2 scenaros
Olaf
flash on that ass level 3 and get first blood- most olafs run ghost instead of flash
Rammus
Red smite + black cleaver. Bully him early
Rek'Sai
Takes practice to learn this matchup. If he misses his knockup early, you can shit on him. Pre 6, without knockup, you beat him. With knockup, you lose. Past 6, you will lose until you get Triforrce + steracks- his ult does way too much damage.
Rengar
Red smite + ninja tabi is a must. Early game, a good rengar out-duels you. Past triforce, youll shit on him
Sejuani
hard champ to play against- way too good of a tank. Invade her early is all i got
Shaco
This matchup all depends on how good the Shaco is. You should be able to beat a bad shaco easily
Shyvana
Pre 6 you win, post 6 you lose. Frozen Mallet + Bloodrazor on shyvana is cancer- you better have a lead before she gets these two items. Red smite all the way
Skarner
Invade and prevent him from getting 6. If skarner gets a lead, youre fucked
Trundle
dont 1v1 this guy, ever
Twitch
invade this guy and get 10 kills by 15 minutes
Vi
your bear stops her q (when its charging) btw
Warwick
tiger can burst this guy down hella fast, preventing his sustain- pre 6 you win (if you kite out the WW e). Past 6 dont fuck with this guy unless youre really far ahead. Never fight him when youre low
Volibear
Forgot this guy was a champion lul. Invade him 24/7, dont let him scale
Xin Zhao
Pre 6 you win, post 6 you lose. Red smite + ninja tabi
Zac
Easy to invade, hard to teamfight against. Invade him as much as you can, but if the game gets into a teamfight oriented game you auto-lose
What's up everyone! My name is WillieP, and I'm a challenger Udyr one trick on NA. I peaked at Challenger 430 LP in Season 8, and am currently hovering (d1/grandmasters). Additionally, I have a YouTube video for my Ultimate Guide to Udyr:
I also have a Twitch where I'll be grinding daily. Hopefully you'll get a grip on the best champion in league by reading this guide- I'll try to cover everything about Udyr, but considering I have over 7,000 games of Udyr and 4,000,000 mastery points I won't be able to cover everything. I'm not going to talk too much about pathing, as this will vary on a game to game basis. Instead, I want to focus on the mindset you have when playing Udyr, and how to take over the early game.
Summoner Spells
Summoner Spells
Flash is essential, never run Ghost unless you're trolling. Arguably, Udyr's biggest weakness is that he is kiteable- Flash allows you to gain a gap closer every 5 minutes. But Willie, wouldn't Ghost help more with the kiting? More movement speed wont help you at all, if they have a team that is well equipped for you. Always take Flash boys
Runes/Build Path
Runes/Build Path
PTA is the king of season 9. Best rune in slot by far, but for some other options you can choose conqueror and lethal tempo. These two runes are decent vs melee teams, but I generally just stick with Press the Attack. Phase Rush and Aftershock are very weak in my opinion, so I wouldn't mess around too much with these runes. Conqueror is really strong in tankier builds, and synergizes well with steraks gage. Especially at higher elos, conqueror is an excellent choice if you need to be a frontline.
Playstyle
Playstyle
If you guys get nothing else out of this guide, make sure to pay very close attention to this section. By far, the most important part of Udyr (tiger Udyr at least) is the mindset you have when you go into a game. You are no longer a jungler, nor a member of your team. You are a selfish player looking to repeatedly kill the enemy jungler, tax your laners, and take/steal enough gold to transform into the Godyr. This means that early game, you HAVE to get ahead, otherwise you are going to be useless late game. I always joke on my stream about Udyr being a "ticking time-bomb"- if you don't have a kill by ten minutes, you most likely are going to lose the game. This can be stressful at times, but once you learn Udyr's playstyle you'll soon find out how easy it is to generate an early lead with him. Below platinum, NO ONE wards, so you can just abuse over extended lanes to get ahead. Once you start reaching somewhat high elo (although tbh I don't think high elo starts until Diamond 1), the easiest way to generate a lead is by invading the enemy jungler. At level 2, Udyr can duel anyone, with a few exceptions. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO INVADE. In fact, you should almost always invade the enemy jungler to at least find out which camps they have/have not done. If you're stuck in Diamond, focus on tracking the enemy jungler and constantly being on the side of the map that he's on- counterganks are the easiest way to snowball a game. In summary, **** the enemies and **** your teammates; you are here to generate gold (at any expense) to build your expensive core items.
Early Game
Early Game
Early game is by far the most important part of playing Udyr, so if you're losing games on him I strongly recommend going back into your replays and figuring out where you made your first mistake. I recommend doing red buff ---> gank, or blue gromp wolves red ---> gank. Vertical jungling is especially good at lower elos, as it allows you to lock down one side of the map. I made a video on vertical jungling, so if you struggle with this concept give it a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16VTd5KVfb4 . Another huge deal with season 9 is krugs - try to farm krugs on respawn if there are no gank opportunities. Krugs are worth more than your wolves/gromp combines, so spam the respawn cycle on a loop.
Mid Game
Mid Game
Get warrior enchant asap. After you have your warrior, look to flash kill an enemy laner and take first tower. Then, secure the neutral objectives (drag + rift herald), and start moving your vision into the enemy jungle. Take every enemy jungle camp that you can; this will begin a long process of starving the enemy team of resources (enemy jungler inst getting camps, so he goes to tax laners, then laners dont get farm, etc). Beyond this, just look to get picks and continue to take towers. As a side note, the above information is under the assumption that you won the early game. If you didn't win the early game, figure out why and focus on improving that :)
Late Game
Late Game
If you made it to late game, you failed. Your goal as Udyr is to end the game before 25 minutes. However, every game can't be this way, so if you find yourself at this point in the game you have 1 of 2 options: Split Push or Teamfight. If your team is really weak or you have gotten outscaled, run it down a sidelane. I get a lot of flack from high elo players about how all I do is split push- I wouldn't be the rank I am if I didn't understand that Udyr sucks *** at team fighting. Udyr can 1v1 ANYONE late game right now, and can certainly outrun them with deadman's and phase rush. Jax, Fiora, Vayne- Udyr beats them all right now. Obviously, there is outplay potential/summoner spell cooldowns, but on even ground Udyr can duel anyone. Fair warning though, Udyr sucks against most kiting champs (Kennen, Gnar, etc). However, just by keeping these champs in a side lane, you're doing your job- Kennen/Gnar will certainly do more damage/cc in a teamfight than Udyr. Try your hardest to out-macro and out-rotate the enemy team, as the NA region as a whole sucks *** at macro. I will be making a guide on my Youtube channel shortly on how to split push properly, so stay tuned! As mentioned above, Udyr sucks *** at teamfgihting. If you chose to go with the teamfight route instead of the split push route, either peel your adc or dive the enemy adc, depending on how fed you are/how bad the positioning of the enemy carry is. To avoid these awkward teamfights, try and force early barons, as they can end the game on the spot. If you're ahead, or if you have a mountain drake, Udyr can solo baron very easily. Try to let your team know this, so you can try to sneak a baron in.
How to Play Udyr From Behind
How to Play Udyr From Behind
So you took my advice, invaded the enemy jungler, and ended up dying. What now? Well, you have one of two options: 1) Continue to be aggressive, or 2) Farm like a little b1tch. The first option is fine for low elo- the enemies will make a lot of mistakes, so you can try and "sneak" your way back into the game. At high elo, your enemies will not be as forgiving. I recommend skipping warrior enchant and going cinderhulk; this will allow you to be a great front line presence for your team, yet still have enough damage to burst a squishy target. The only problem with this build is you have 0 split push potential and 0 dive potential- you are going to have to try and play around your team. But since you are behind, teamfighting is the best option since you won't be able to split push effectively anyway.
Summary
Summary
Obviously, there's a lot of stuff about Udyr I didn't cover- I could type my college thesis on Udyr if I had to. If you ever have any questions, hop over to my Twitch and feel free to ask me there. Basically, invade early ---> get kills on laner ----> solo objectives ----> get an early baron ----> end game. This season is incredibly snowbally, which is a perfect environment for Udyr to thrive in. Best of luck climbing, may the tiger flow through you (cheesy enough lul?)
