Galio the supporter

Welcome to my 2nd build, this one for Galio. Galio is an amazing asset to any team if played right. While he can be difficult to play right, once you learn his skills as well as how to and when to properly use them in battle, you will become the greatest support for your team. Here is my explanation of his skills, as well as my play style, rune, item, mastery, and summoner spell choices. Feel free to mix and match what you'd like, but I will be sure to go over everything.

Skills and Skill Sequence

Runic Skin- (Passive) Galio converts 50% of his total Magic Resistance into Ability Power.

I'm pretty sure that this is self-explanatory. This passive comes from his item choices which I will go into more depth on later.

Resolute Smite- (Active) Galio fires a concussive blast from his eyes, 60 / 115 / 170 / 225 / 280 (+0.6) magic damage near the impact location and reducing enemy movement speed by 24 / 28 / 32 / 36 / 40 % for 2.5 seconds.

This move is part of the "nuking" capability that Galio has. This combined with Righteous Gust is your "nuke". This is also a perfect combo with exhaust, as you can use exhaust and at the end of it, you are sure to be able to get this skill shot off to ensure that your enemy is slowed EVEN more. This is a skill shot, so practice is everything, and you won't hit it every time, but if you learn the skill and get better at it (I.E. leading the enemy with it or placing it ahead of where they are running) it can be a very effective move for team ganks, as well as team get aways.

Bulwark- (Active) Galio shields a friendly champion for 4 seconds, increasing their Armor and Magic Resistance by 30 / 45 / 60 / 75 / 90. Each time that unit suffers damage, Galio is healed for 20 / 32 / 44 / 56 / 68 (+0.3). (-20% healing for each consecutive hit)

This is the move I like to call, my "Oh ****" button for LoL. While it doesn't grant invulnerability, it does help enemies resist magic and physical moves especially when low. This move helps make Galio the strong support champion that he is. There have been numerous times playing him where I have saved an ally from an Ezreal ult by popping this on, and the low cooldown makes it useful for getting it on someone else trying to get away. This in combination with Righteous Gust can, if your allies are decently intelligent, lend itself to a clean getaway from an enemy gank.

Righteous Gust- (Active) Galio unleashes a gust of concussive wind that deal 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+0.8) magic damage to all enemies in its path. A directional draft remains for 5 seconds, increasing the speed of allies by 20 / 24 / 32 / 36 %

This move has so many uses, as do all of Galio's moves. Both this and Resolute Smite can be used as a nuke combination, as well as a "get the hell away from that Cho'Gath trying to eat me" combination. The speed boost allows for a speed increase and Resolute Smite can be used to slow enemies down in order for you or an ally to get away. This move is great also for initiating a team gank, as you can boost someones speed enough to catch a fleeing enemey, slow/stun them, and get the kill. This move has many uses, it all just depends on the situation.

Idol of Durand- (Active) Galio channels for 2.5 seconds, taunting nearby foes and blocking 30% of incoming damage.

After channeling, Galio deals 220 / 330 / 440 (+0.85) magic damage to surrounding enemies, plus an additional 10% damage for each attack suffered while channeling. Max 80% bonus damage.

AHHHHHH! I cannot stress enough how situational this ultimate is. While all of Galio's moves are incredibly situational, this one is by far the most. I've seen many Galio's charge into a team fight, ult and think that they will kill an entire team, when in fact it takes off MAYBE 75% health off of the few champions they catch and said Galio typically dies afterward. You must play this ultimate at the right time, this really can decide team fights if used correctly. I will go over more about some suggestions I have for combo's later in the build.

Masteries

I went with a pretty standard tank build for masteries. Because Galio really doesn't stack any "tank" items besides mostly magic resist, it's hard for him to be as resilient as he needs to be. These few talent points help him a little bit in terms of survival. Play with them how you want, this is only my suggestion.

Items

Now looking at my item build you may be thinking that I've lost my mind. And to that I say, it's been long gone for a good 5 years now, however my item choices come with an explanation. Now there is a pretty standard core setup for how to INITIALLY build a Galio. This, as you have probably seen almost EVERY SINGLE Galio build starts with a Chalice of Harmony, however what I've seen most people do is grab Meki Pendant first, and this always confused me. Yes the mana regen is nice, but that initial Magic Resist/AP is too nice for me to pass up in the beginning of a game. Therefore:

Early Game:

I start with a Null-Magic Mantle This way you get a slight edge on magic resist as well as some early AP, combined with the added support from Runes. Also grab 2 health pots (With Clarity ( I will go over this later) you won't really need the mana pots).

As the game continues, pick up your Chalice of Harmony but only after at least level 6 or if you die. My personal preference in any game is to stay in my lane as long as I can until I absolutely must go back, this gives me optimal time to get gold, harass enemies and get levels. If you have the gold, also pick up the parts or all of Mercury Treads and begin building Banshee's Veil .

Now this is where my item build changes a bit, because now you have options. As Galio you want to be smart about your build, because while you do get a good amount of AP from getting MR items and you are a MR tank, you need to build based on what the opposing team is dealing out damage wise. Therefore:

For a CASTER HEAVY TEAM:

Work towards your Aegis of the Legion to----> Abyssal Scepter to----> Force of Nature and if you have time in the game, extra gold, or just want some extra survivability, grab yourself a Guardian Angel
Again, this all depends on what kind of team you are facing. Build this particular one based on what you feel is necessary FIRST. If you feel a guardian will help you more before Abyssal Scepter, than build it first. It is all a matter of how the game is going and your own personal preference.

For a MELEE HEAVY TEAM:

This is where the build diverges from the MR. While you still want some for that all important AP, having some armor for use against Melee Opponents can make your Ultimate more powerful and make it harder for them to kill you. For this team, after Banshee's, grab yourself again an Aegis of the Legion then Thornmail to Guardian Angel to Force of Nature .

Again, this is all up to you at which point you build all of this, however I believe the addition of a Thornmail and Guardian early can help against some pesky melee opponents, especially a Gangplank's parrley in combination with your Bulwark skill.

Against a HYBRID TEAM:

The best advice I can give here is to build smart, and by that I mean, see who on their team is the most threat to yours in a team fight setting or in general, and try to build a little bit towards that without sacrificing all of your survivability.

Summoner Spells

Exhaust- The reason that I choose exhaust is because for me it makes it easier for you or your team to catch up to your enemy if you get them with it, and it makes hitting your Resolute Smite a lot easier. While other summoner spells may work better for some players based on their play style, I recommend these just because of how much use I have gotten out of it playing Galio.

Clarity- I chose clarity because Galio OOM's so unbelievably fast, especially early game it makes me cry sometimes. The fact that I've had games where someone gets away with 10 health because I had no mana to hit them with my Resolute Smite, makes Clarity worth it to me. Even in late game, its great to keep a teammate in battle longer so they don't have to go back to get mana. I find it incredibly useful even when not specced into. If you choose not to use clarity, switch out a health pot for a mana pot at the start of any game, because you WILL oom, and it will suck, I promise.

Rune Choices

My rune choices are debatable. I had a tough time figuring out what worked well, and I most likely will be tweaking these, however for now these are my choices.

Mark of Insight- The magic pen is nice for that "nuke" that Galio has. It isn't significant but it does the job. You can decide for yourself, but this is what I use for now.

Seal of Vitality- The health per level in my opinion is incredible, just because increasing the health of any champion you play I think is nice, especially for a "tank" like Galio. It allows you to take a bit more punishment and in the end could really decide the out-comes of battles if you have that slight health edge. It may not be that significant but for me, I like having it.

Glyph of Celerity- This is the major one that I debated with myself on. The reduced CD's are INCREDIBLY nice for Galio especially when he is playing his support role. Being able to use Bulwark and Righteous Gust more often is a plus for getaways, and the slight reduction on the Ultimate can really be a game changer. I emphasize CAN because like I said earlier, his Ultimate is HIGHLY situational, I really can't stress that enough.

Quintessence of Shielding- I went with the MR per level here because the MR, based on his Passive, can give you great AP even at the beginning of a game. End game is really helps as well, especially if you are building for a Melee Heavy team because it can give you that lost AP that you are sacrificing for the Armor items.

All of this is debatable, I'm not saying THIS IS WHAT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST DO OR DIE!!!....but its a suggestion, take it for what you will.

Some Ability and Combo Suggestions

1. Resolute Smite---> Righteous Gust = Nuke Combo. Use it, you can take a squishy champion down to half health with this alone.

2. The "Resolute Smite Get-A-Way": Resolute Smite the champion (aim for where they WILL be within another second or 2. Play it smart)---> Righteous Gust forward away from them, towards safety---> Use the wind stream for the speed boost---> Resolute Smite again if they gain on you.

3. The "Gusting Gank": Righteous Gust in front of or towards an enemy champion---> Bulwark your ally champion---> Have them use the gust to run quicker towards the enemy---> Resolute Smite/Exhaust enemy. Since these are skill shots, these combos need to be performed quickly to be effective.

4. The "Bursting Stone-Wall": I am corny with names, forgive me. This is for the ultimate. Like I have stated a few times, his Ultimate is very situational. Don't run into a group of 5 enemies with your team 30 paces behind you thinking you are God and ultimate. You can and will die. My suggestion is 1) Wait until a few enemies are near your turret, the taunt will force the turret on them, and the damage they take to increase, increasing the likelihood of a kill or getting a champion low enough to chase and kill. Wait until some champions are lower OR you have an AOE champion like a Ryze or Fiddlesticks near by. You ulting keeps them in place allowing a fiddle ot ult in, or a Ryze to ult and aoe the whole team, INCLUDING the damage you deal out.

I did not write this guide myself, but i hate having my build being incomplete.
