Threats to Katarina with this build

Threat Champion Notes
1
Karthus Not a tough matchup at all, his early is very weak and your early is very strong. He can be killed at level 2, he needs to hit level 6 to be effective. Even then, he has nothing to cancel your ult and this matchup is just really easy to deal with as you overpower him in damage in almost every way. Buy a Zhonya's to avoid his ult damage. All in him at level 2 or 3, you'll either force him to flash or simply kill him, he can literally do nothing about it.
1
Teemo I put him here, because I hate him, and because he's super easy to burst, you won't ever see a teemo mid but if you do, just know this is probably the easiest laning phase. Kill all Teemo mains. 8)

FAQ for Katarina in Patch 7.9 up to 7.13

So Why do you buy Haunting Guise now after Hextech Gunblade?

The simple fact is; this item is phenominal on Katarina as it gives flat magic penetration and health. It is easily one of the best early game Items on Katarina and is excellent for snowballing. Buying it after Hextech Gunblade is ideal as flat stats mean a lot more early, so try to refrain from buying this item in the later stages of the game.

I don't upgrade this into Liandry's Torment early because you'd be wasting your full strength, you are better off buying Haunting Guise and keeping it until late game where you will be upgrading it to Liandry's Torment

Do you now purchase Banshee's Veil as a core item?

Under certain circumstances, Banshee's Veil can prove to be an ABSOLOUTLEY phenominal choice thanks to it's passive, which blocks an enemy spell. I wouldn't consider this CORE as you'd only want to purchase it against AP champions to make the full use of the MR it gives. This is also a great item if you're buying it as a last item because blocking enemy spells in the late game can be crucial.

The CDR the item gives is a good thing to have in there and the recipe is fantastic. There is no more Negatron Cloak rush thankfully, this helps Katarina a lot because Negatron Cloak rush just shuts her early laning phase to a complete stop and it becomes hard to be oppressive during lane.

What about the recipe changes for Guardian Angel?

Having a B. F. Sword in there was definatley an interesting decision by Riot, but it's obviously complimenting AD Carries, however you do see some Katarina players buying this item, what gives?

Fact is, the AD part of this is really good to have early on, but as the game keeps going AP outscales AD, so it becomes questionable whether you should keep this item by late game in your inventory.

If you find yourself dying a lot early on, perhaps you can purchase this item, but then again you are honestly so much better off with Banshee's Veil or Zhonya's Hourglass as they are both great defensive options for Katarina. Guardian Angel is great, but I just don't see it fit in with Katarina - it also only has one Cloth Armor as part of it's recipe. You wouldn't want to buy that against let's say a Syndra - You'd buy this if you are doing WELL and not when you are BEHIND because B. F. Sword is an expensive purchase.

It's not bad, but it's not good is the point I'm trying to make, my final conclusion is I would not recommend the item because the AD part of it is simply unneeded and you already have Hextech Gunblade to provide you for that.

Is Doran's Shield your starting item from now on?

Yes, I find it to be an exceptionally good item on Katarina in the early stages of the game and not only is it a safe item, but it also helps with last hitting minions. Combine that with the mastery that helps you last hit Savagery, you basically get an extra 10 damage to your auto attacks on minions.

How big is the Doran's Shield nerf?

The Doran's Shield nerf doesn't hurt the item as a whole, you are limited to one health pot but it should be no big deal against harder matchups because as you back, you buy Refillable Potion anyway or more health pots. Doran's shield nerf is only in terms of it's gold but statistically it is a solid item and I still buy it.

Overall, this is actually a very solid patch for Katarina and I'm very happy with the item changes that were made. Best of luck on the rift, and hope my guide helps you out!

Runes Reforged Coming Pre-Season

I'm sure most of you have heard already about riot announcing 'runes reforged' which essentially will change the gameplay of League Of Legends drastically, including how Katarina will be played with these new runes/masteries.

Runes/masteries will be combined in season 7's preseason, so this guide will be updated accordingly to that, as we always have for every major update that happens to the game.

Here is riot's video regarding the new runes reforged.

Season 7 Assassin Update Changes

I'd like to keep the changes to Katarina here incase you haven't caught up with the assassin rework.

Voracity (Passive):

Remains the same with her resets on assists/kills.
Her spin damage on Voracity is one of the most important things in her kit as it adds a lot to your damage, try not to miss it.
Spin damage scales up per champion level.

Bouncing Blades (Q):

Now bounces few units behind the enemy target/minion, dagger lands exact same time even if it doesn't bounce on 3 targets.
The dagger bounces 3 times instead of 5.
You can Shunpo on Bouncing Blades before it lands on the ground.

Preparation (W):

Takes a little bit of time to land on the ground.
Gives movement speed/scales up with every point in it.

Shunpo (E):

AD % gone down from 65% to 55%, she still remains very solid with her early damage.
Can Shunpo directionally on daggers/enemies.
Shunpo is refunded a certain amount of %CD when she uses Shunpo on a dagger on these levels: 1/6/11/16

Death Lotus (R):

Still had AD/AP scalings.
Daggers thrown per second is noticeably faster.

Here is my video rundown on Patch 6.22, the Patch when the Assassins got reworked to help you catch up on Katarina and note on the important things you need to know.

Why Katarina?

Here are the 6 reasons why you should play Katarina, a video that helps you see what makes Katarina a blade-wielding beast and why you should play her.

Guide Top

Skills

Voracity | Passive

Whenever an enemy champion dies within 3 seconds of Katarina damaging them, her cooldowns are reduced by 15 seconds.

DAGGERS: Whenever Katarina touches a Dagger on the ground, she uses it to slash through all nearby enemies, dealing 75 - 285 (Based on levels 1/6/11/16) (+ 100% bonus AD) (+ 55 / 70 / 85 / 100% AP) magic damage and consuming the Dagger.

Daggers last 4 seconds before disappearing.

Bouncing Blades (Q)

Katarina throws a Dagger to the target enemy that bounces to up to 2 nearby unaffected enemies, dealing magic damage to each target.

After bouncing to its targets, the Dagger then lands on the ground opposite from where it struck the first target. The Dagger always takes the same amount of time to land from the time it was cast.

COOLDOWN: 11 / 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 (Seconds)
RANGE: 675 Units
MAGIC DAMAGE: 75 / 105 / 135 / 165 / 195 (+ 30% AP)

Preperation (W)

Katarina tosses a Dagger into the air at her current location, which lands after 1.5 seconds, and gains bonus movement speed that decays over 1.25 seconds.

COOLDOWN: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 (Seconds)
RANGE: On-cast ability where you're standing.
BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90%

Shunpo (E)

Katarina blinks to the target location around the target unit or Dagger.
If the target is an enemy, Katarina deals them magic damage. Otherwise, she deals the same magic damage to the nearest enemy in range.

Picking up a Dagger reduces Shunpo cooldown by 78 / 84 / 90 / 96%.

COOLDOWN: 10 / 9.5 / 9 / 8.5 / 8 (Seconds)
RANGE: 700 Units
MAGIC DAMAGE: 25 / 40 / 55 / 70 / 85 (+ 25% AP) (+ 65% AD)

Video Showcasing how to utlize Shunpo in every stage of the game

Death Lotus (R)

Katarina rapidly spins in place and channels for 2.5 seconds, throwing a dagger every 0.166 seconds to each nearby enemy champion, up to a maximum of 3 at a time, dealing them magic damage and applying Grievous Wounds icon Grievous Wounds for 3 seconds.

Moving or reactivating Death Lotus immediately ends its effects.

COOLDOWN: 90 / 60 / 45 (Seconds)
RANGE: 550 Units
MAGIC DAMAGE PER DAGGER: 25 / 37.5 / 45 (+ 19% AP) (+ 22% bonus AD)

Short Version Of My Katarina Guide | Video

For those who just want to see me explain all the most essential points of this Katarina guide, I have an updated video on that, explaining everything from build paths, Runes, items, masteries, when you should buy a certain item etc etc.

Here is everything you need to know about Katarina

Katarina Combos Explained in one video

In this next video, I explain how to properly wave clear using Shunpo, Preparation and Bouncing Blades. Where you position with Shunpo matters a lot and it pretty much results where your Bouncing Blades will land depending where you Shunpo.

In this video, I explain STEP by STEP how to all-in your enemy pre level 6 properly in the most consistent way possible. Shunpo has a bad refund % pre level 6, so utilizing this technique will allow it so that your enemies can't dodge your Bouncing Blades dagger on the ground by moving left or right.
keep in mind this applies ONLY when you are pre level 6 as the Shunpo refund is attrocious early on and the refund is further improved at level 6, and more so at 11 and 16 where using both Preparation and Bouncing Blades together would be more ideal rather than delaying your Bouncing Blades after Preparation.

In this video, I showcase Directional Shunpo and how to fully utilize it during all stages of the game. Directional Shunpo and how you use it means all the difference in the world and mastering this takes time and effort.

In this Video, I explain how to deal with displacements such as Jayce who can knock you away from your daggers denying you a refund on Shunpo. Here is how to properly deal with that situation.

For this one, I showcase the basic fundamental concept of Clearing jungle camps and waves.

In this video, I showcase how you should work around Hextech Gunblade and explain certain combos with the item. It's a very important item on Katarina and I consider it to be of utmost importance.

This video will explain Bouncing Blades and Preparation technique you can use during the lane or outside of lane, it is more of a patient waiting game but pays off when the enemy is away from your Bouncing Blades on the ground.

What Every Mid Laner Needs To Know

Mechanics are one thing - knowledge is another.

Hey folks.

Here are some tips to help you win mid lane, mechanics are a big part of the game surely but I've never really digged deep into what makes YOU a good mid laner in my videos as I mostly focus on the mechanical aspects of Katarina during both the laning phase and in teamfights, and pretty much every stage of the game and in this video I explain exactly just that.

I think it's important to take a step back and understand what makes you a good mid laner in every context rather than simply your ability to play Katarina, instead of focusing on your mechanical aspect of your playstyle, we focus on a wider range as it should be for all mid laners. The Video will help you see the full puzzle rather than the 3/4 of it.

Hope it helps out, see ya'll on the rift!

Guide Top

Runes

Greater Mark of Attack Damage

Katarina has good early AD damage from her Shunpo & Voracity spin damage. It fully compliments her playstyle in the early stages of the game and these runes help you get first blood effectively.

These marks are mainly used for it's strength in the early game, allowing you to be aggressive and go for first blood as with Katarina - her strength comes within his aggression, and she tends to be an aggressive assassin, so when given the chance you should capatalize on the enemy laner.

These marks also help you with last hitting minions as a nice little trait.

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration

We also go for magic penetration to help us scale into mid/late game. since we already go for Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage we don't need to go full attack damage in marks.

Greater Seal of Scaling Health

This is your typical seal against AP champions, it gives you more health as the game goes on and it's pretty standard seals on all mid laners. You have no reason not to grab this. AP assassins/mages all need to have good amount of health late game. With Rylai's Crystal Scepter you'd also have a very good amount of health later on, however I don't prioritize this item as much but it's a good place to start if you're just learning to get into Katarina. Rylai's Crystal Scepter is still a good rush item if you're not a fan of the Hextech Gunblade rush.

Greater Glyph of Magic Penetration

We go for more magic penetration in glyphs because of Katarina's nature with magic damage, you would already deal plenty of damage thanks to attack damage in your runes, that's where your early game strength lies in, which is why we don't go Greater Glyph of Ability Power or Greater Quintessence of Ability Power - we already buy AP items anyway.

Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage

We go for extra attack damage in our quints so that we can add in Greater Mark of Magic Penetration in there along with attack damage. This will give us a very deadly early game while also maintaining our mid/late game with magic penetration scaling, to top it off we also buy magic penetration items such as Haunting Guise and Sorcerer's Shoes

Greater Mark of Attack Damage

Same explanation as before, it synchs well with Hextech Gunblade and against AD champions you have no reason not to take this aswell and go the Hextech Gunblade route. After Hextech Gunblade you can go for Zhonya's Hourglass or Luden's Echo. I personally would go Zhonya's Hourglass after Hextech Gunblade simply because you can't delay Zhonya's Hourglass against AD champions, it's also really good for Katarina.

Greater Seal of Scaling Health

The reason we don't go Greater Seal of Armor is because losing out on Greater Seal of Scaling Health hurts AP mid laners HARD generally speaking, you need late game health as a squishy burst champion and going Greater Seal of Armor hurts Katarina in that sense of late game, making her an easier target.

Greater Glyph of Magic Penetration

As explained in the rune page above, they are super useful even against AD champions because people tend to build Hexdrinker and it's generally good to have the magic penetration. I get it against AD champions for the exact same reason as I explained in the rune page above.

Greater Quintessence of Magic Penetration

same explanation as above, the magic pen quint will help you get a total of 7.7 magic penetration since you're losing it out on marks by going Greater Mark of Attack Damage.

Greater Quintessence of Armor

Since you're against an AD champion, armor works wonders here. With a mix of both Greater Seal of Scaling Health and Greater Quintessence of Armor you have generally a strong early game. Your Greater Mark of Attack Damage will help you with the early damage, so you don't have to worry too much for losing out on AP, you build AP on Katarina anyway, your goal here is to fight your lane opponent with ease and these quints help with that.

Guide Top

Build Path

OR OR

You can choose one of these three items here, I personally begin with The Dark Seal or Doran's Shield. The Dark Seal of it's glory stacks which help you a ton early game and it also has a 25% increased healing from potions, allowing you to sustain lane at a higher rate than without The Dark Seal.

Doran's Shield is also probably one of the BEST starting items on Katarina as it allows you to sustain thanks to the item's health regen, it's also very good for last hitting minions thanks to it's passive and this is the ideal starting item in most situations. Buy this against poke/ranged champions, in matchups where you feel like you will be hit a lot or simply buy it for the increased survivability rate that the item provides which I think is fantastic on Katarina.

You can start Long Sword if you feel like you want extra AD early on to aggress, however I absoloutley would recommend The Dark Seal because of it's glory stacks and gives you more AP for every kill/assist. It helps Katarina immensely early on since she tends to be a very aggressive laner. I put this here as an option even though I don't go for it, because I get that there are a lot of different ways to play Katarina but generally, in my opinion; this starting item is usually a big no no.

This is your next item, which I consider CORE on current Katarina when running this rune page. the Greater Mark of Attack Damage along with 2x Long Sword helps out a ton when dealing damage. your Shunpo, Voracity & Death Lotus all have % AD scalings which makes Hextech Gunblade a much better item than before. Luden's Echo used to be pretty much your go-to rush item, but Luden's Echo rush feels a lot weaker now compared to Hextech Gunblade for the simple reason that your Bouncing Blades poke damage in lane is not what Katarina does anymore and you can't drop their health hard enough. You have to be more 'up close in your face' now by catching daggers and dealing damage, making Hextech Gunblade an ideal choice.

Here is how you build Hextech Gunblade properly to deal the best amount of damage possible before the item is completed with it's recipe that benefits your kit the most:
-> -> -> -> ->

The reason you don't rush Bilgewater Cutlass is because Hextech Revolver basic attack is crucial when it comes to trading against your opponent. Double Long Sword helps with your Voracity & Shunpo damage but completing it to Bilgewater Cutlass doesn't help you as much with trading as Hextech Revolver does.

You should also buy Sorcerer's Shoes rather than building Bilgewater Cutlass after you are done with Hextech Revolver because it does NOT add much to your damage, the active only deals 100 Damage, you are better off with movement speed & flat magic penetration that comes with Sorcerer's Shoes. Build smart, and you'll see a difference in your overall damage.

The situational items, here buy accordingly to the flow of the game.

This is a MAJOR item on Katarina and I'm buying it a lot more than I used to simply because the flat magic penetration that it gives is far too good on Katarina aswell as the survivability thanks to it's HP. You usually want to buy this after finishing Hextech Gunblade and it's very good for snowballing.

If you feel like you need a defensive item in your current situation, simply skip this item for either Banshee's Veil or Zhonya's Hourglass should the situation arise for these two items. Sometimes, going Haunting Guise isn't always a must, but it sure gets the job done,

just MAKE SURE YOU DON'T UPGRADE THIS ITEM TO Liandry's Torment EARLY ON. I'LL PUT THIS ON CAPS LOCK BECAUSE IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT. Upgrade this item as the game progresses because the current % HP damage is much better later on than early on, you'd be wasting your early/mid game strength by finishing Liandry's Torment early. You are better off going Zhonya's Hourglass or Banshee's Veil after Haunting Guise.

You want to build this item when against an AD champion like Zed, Yasuo or Talon. The active helps and you really don't lose out on much damage because Zhonya's Hourglass is both a good aggresive/defensive item, allowing you to jump in fights and zhonya afterwards when you're in trouble. It's also a SAFE item purchase, suitable in every situation and NOT only against AD champions. This item is both good when snowballing and when losing as it's guaranteed safety active is phenomenal to have on a champion like Katarina. This is easily one of the best items on Katarina.

Buy this item if you like mobility on Katarina. When snowballing, I honestly think you are better off with Rabadon's Deathcap as it gives an immense amount of AP along with 35% AP increase from it's unique passive. This item is fine if you absoloutley need mobility, however it is an extreme overkill in single target because Hextech Gunblade does a lot of the work to begin with anyway, so you are better off building Rabadon's Deathcap most of the time to be able to deal damage to EVERYONE at a high rate rather than only relying on Luden's Echo 100 charges to single target burst someone. You can still single target burst someone even with Rabadon's Deathcap.

This is an item you DON'T want to get on Katarina anymore as the changes it has recieved does not benefit Katarina or any mid laner for the matter. Avoid this and instead for MR options, buy Banshee's Veil.

Grab this item if you feel you need the HP/slow. This is an ideal choice to go for on reworked Katarina because it honestly compliments her playstyle really well with the constant daggers on the ground, keep in mind however that it has been nerfed but as for compensation, it's cheap, which makes it an ideal pick when behind or when you're simply not getting enough farm. I wouldn't consider it a rush item anymore because of the AP nerf on the item, but it comes in handy with the HP it gives and I'd buy this way in the late game as a last item or after my 2nd item if I despartley need the HP and I can't get much done in the game, you can buy this item whenever you feel like you need it.

Grab this item if you don't care about Luden's Echo movement speed, as that's the main reason you'd want to buy Luden's Echo. Keep in mind that Rabadon's Deathcap costs more and it's also a fantastic item when you are snowballing/when your team is ahead. I would absoloutley not recommend this item when you are behind, and you'd be better off with a Zhonya's Hourglass. I usually find myself buying Rabadon's Deathcap as a 3rd item after purchasing Zhonya's Hourglass as my 2nd item if they aren't building MR. I wouldn't need to prioritize Void Staff as of yet.

You most certainly need this item in every game because it penetrates Base MR/MR from runes/masteries etc etc. Don't delay Void Staff too much, this would be your 3rd or 4th item at most because it's %35 magic penetration is too much to pass on.

This item now has a B. F. Sword as part of it's recipe. It can still be very effective under certain circumstances but as for now, I avoid purchasing it because I feel the other items are more suited for Katarina and the AD part of this only really helps out on the early levels. I wouldn't highly recommend this at the moment.

Overall, this is how your build would typically look like:

--> --> --> --> --> --> -->

Keep in mind this is never a set order, if you feel you need Zhonya's Hourglass earlier to deal with that Vi ultimate, go for it. Buy whatever Item you feel like you need most.

Items

Item Choices

Luden's Echo used to be a core item on Katarina but that was a time before her rework. I would completley avoid buying this item unless you simply can't live without it, but you should definitely move on from this item and purchase Hextech Gunblade as your main core item.

Hextech Gunblade is the new best thing on Katarina. Since her abilities now having AD scalings on her Shunpo, Death Lotus and Voracity it's more of a reason to buy this item. With the correct rune page, this item is a monster. This is why I go for the Greater Mark of Attack Damage as buying 2x Long Sword early can really help with the overall damage. I wouldn't rush into Bilgewater Cutlass because that's a horrendous item rush to go for, go 2x Long Sword then buy Hextech Revolver.

Hextech Revolver empowers your basic attack, so make sure you do give out an auto attack during laning phase or when skirmishing. This is my go to item at the moment because I love the burst damage it gives out and the other reason being is that Luden's Echo as a rush item is NOT as good as it used to be with old Katarina with that being said, a combination of both Hextech Gunblade AND Luden's Echo is extremley powerful since you have the active damage + Luden's passive damage for initial burst. You already do so much damage before you even lay out your full burst damage!

Abyssal Mask has been reworked into a tank item, if you want a defensive MR item go for Banshee's Veil - avoid Abyssal Mask at all cost on Katarina.

I usually would never go for this, it's WAY too risky of an item to go for and it's usually not worth it. It's mostly an unnecesary risk to take because in LoL, mistakes tend to happen. just stick to your main crucial items and you'll be fine. This item is good however if you play in the lower elos and you're confident with Katarina.

Rylai's Crystal Scepter has been nerfed a long while back, but as compensation for it's nerf, they reduced it's cost. Still worth picking up? No.

The main reason is that there are just far better items to get on Katarina - you have 6 slots in your inventory, and this item does not fall in line with how strong the other items are on Katarina. I would avoid this, for Health and damage simply buy Liandry's Torment and it's definitely a thousand times more effective than Rylai's Crystal Scepter in every way. Liandry's Torment also gives you magic penetration and % current health damage.

Haunting Guise is a fantastic early game item and it's main strength comes from it's 15 flat magic penetration. Flat stats mean a lot early, and Katarina loves strong flat stats. Upgrade this into Liandry's Torment at the later stages of the game, don't get a Liandry's Torment early game as it's effectiveness mostly comes in the later stages of the game. Keep Haunting Guise in your inventory until you finish your other main items.

Deathfire Grasp is the key to everything. It has 10% cooldown and-.. ah, I miss this item. #neverforget

An important item for all AP carries, definatley grab this for maximum damage, this is a self explanatory item and is a must on Katarina when given the chance to buy it. Don't greed for this item however, don't purchase it when you are behind. It's a HIGHLY offensive item and sometimes it is better to purchase a Zhonya's Hourglass or Banshee's Veil first. It's also very expensive.

Void Staff is one of the best items in League Of Legends. Not just on Katarina, but for all mid laners. It ignores 35% of the enemy's magic resist dealing significant damage. this is a must get, it synchronizes really well with sorcerer shoes's magic penetration, this is your bread and butter late game when the enemy starts building MR.

Guardian Angel used to be a great last item, but it has received recipe changes. It now has a B.F. sword as part of it's recipe and a Cloth Armor - I would avoid buying this on Katarina - It is mostly ment for AD fighters/AD carries now such as Wukong, Riven, Jinx etc etc.

A great item to have for those AD assassins like Zed or Yasuo but that's not always the reason we get this item. Zhonya's Hourglass active is what makes it what it is. Annie flashed in your range to throw her tibbers? pop Zhonya. Zed uses Death Mark on you? Pop Zhonya. Syndra uses her ult? Pop Zhonya. Zhonya's Hourglass just adds so much more flexibility to your kit allowing you to make risky plays and make strong initiatives.

This item simply compliments Katarina's playstyle in every way.

Warding Guide | Every LoL player needs to know.

If you are a ranked Solo queue player, this is by far the most important thing to keep in mind. EVERY League Of Legends player needs to know this, period. If you want to have better vision control overall, you need to understand how every lane manages their wards. Learning Katarina is not just understanding her mechanically, but understanding the entire game as a whole is truly mastering the game and allows you to perform at an extreme rate with Katarina as you begin to understand ward patterns and many other things such as the enemy player's behaviour, etc etc.

Mid Lane Warding | Indepth Precision

Here are my preffered warding spots when playing mid lane for both control wards and totems. It's a video showing the indepth precision with the warding and how it should be done inside bushes, even the placement of it matters and determines how much it actually reveals.

Champion Match-ups

Text version of champion matchups are in the threat levels from 1 to 10 in the beginning of my guide.

I'm making an episodic series on how to deal with every champion in League Of Legends as Katarina in the mid lane, I'm featuring 6 champions per episode and how to deal with those champions accordingly in every situation and scenario - Laning/Teamfighting/when to ult etc etc. - All champions listed per episode are in the video's thumbnails on the left side where I showcase them from number 1 to 6.

Katarina Coaching

Here is one example of my coaching session with a viewer on my stream who requested a coach session on Katarina. My coach sessions can take up to 3 hours as I really like to go in detail and explain all the mistakes that are done in the game, I only coach Katarina players.

And yes, the coaching is free. Here is an example of a coach session:

To submit your own Katarina coach session, I have a video here that explains how to do so.
