Introduction
Q - Overload.
This provides your basic damage/poke in lane, and is and extremely important skillshot to land.
This ability does significantly more damage if the target is marked by your E. If you kill a marked target with your Q, it will spread the mark to nearby enemy champions and minions.
W - Rune Prison.
This is Ryze's main and only source of CC, this is what makes Ryze who he is in my opinion. This ability's snare duration is double if the target is marked by your E.
E - Spell Flux.
This is what makes Ryze different than before. This ability enhances his Q and W in different ways, explained above. This ability will mark a target for 3 seconds, and if you hit an already marked target, it will spread the mark to nearby enemies champions and minions.

Ryze has a few combos, but his bread and butter will be -
E - W - Q
You can follow up with more E - Q's, or back off after this initial poke. Later in the game this can do enough damage to proc stormraider's surge, and this will also proc your passive.
If you don't want to proc your passive, or want more damage and less CC/utility -
E - Q - W - Q
This will provide you will 2 Q's initially instead of one, but will lower your snare duration to one second instead of two.
E - W - Q
You can follow up with more E - Q's, or back off after this initial poke. Later in the game this can do enough damage to proc stormraider's surge, and this will also proc your passive.

Ryze's ultimate can be very tricky to co-ordinate in Solo-Queue. It requires knowledge of position and engagements. You should NEVER teleport into the enemies by yourself. (I've seen it.) You should also NEVER use this ultimate to engage into a CC heavy/Burst heavy enemy team.
Ryze's ultimate can be a great utility tool, and if the enemy has blown all CC can be used as an escape. Ryze's ultimate is good for ganking lanes, and for catching an escaping enemy.

Tear of the Goddess should be very self-explanatory. This item gives Ryze what he needs - mana.
Rod of Ages - This item increases Ryze's survivability while giving him a fair amount of mana and Ability Power.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity - This item will provide Ryze with some CDR earlier on, since our first two items don't give him any. This should be finished before Rod of Ages however, as without this CDR, Ryze's effectiveness can fall short in extended fights.
Frozen Heart - This items gives an insane combination of mana and CDR for a fairly low price. It is especially good when facing and AD heavy enemy team composition, as it gives good armor and it's passive effect.
Void Staff - This item provides a fair amount of AP and great magic penetration. Get this if you need Magic Pen. but do not need Magic Resistance.
Abyssal Staff - This item provides a fair amount of AP and Magic Resist, along with Magic Pen. This item is great against AP Heavy/Low CC compositions.
Rabadon's Deathcap - This item provides a large amount of Ability Power, but no defensive statistics or Magic Penetration. Only purchase this if you have finished void staff and still do not require defense.
Banshee's Veil - This item is great if you require more magic resistance and health, get this as your last item against AP heavy/High CC compositions.
Randuin's Omen - This item is great if you require more armor and health, get this as your last item against AD heavy/Low CC compositions.
Zhonya's Hourglass - Provides Armor and Ability Power. It's active is great for survivability and directly counters champions like Zed. This item is good against AD heavy/CC heavy compositions.
Guardian Angel - This is great for some mixed resistances, and if you are being focused in fights. This item will allow you to have more survivability, and should be purchased if you require mixed resistances.
