Introduction
But for now how do we play him?
As a Sol player you want to use your tankiness in the early laning phase to build up boots and a catalyst as quickly as possible, so that you can trade as a mana hungry dragon more often and win. After your first back keep an eye out on push lanes so that you can teleport in or use your (E) (Q) combo to initiate a lane fight. Keeping in mind you have to activate your (Q).
Things to Keep in Mind
You have no quick escape so if you need to run, move straight to take advantage of your passive so that you may outrun your opponents.
Gap closing champions like Zed and Yasuo are deadly as they can avoid your stars. Keep them at a distance and farm carefully.
Begin with Sapphire Crystal and 3 biscuits. Choose the Crystal over Doran's Ring as it helps get Aurelion closer to Catalyst in addition to increasing his base mana to 600. Which combined with the meditation mastery gives him a nice 9 mana per 5 seconds at level 1 that scales.
On your first back get boots and catalyst to allow you to sit in lane waiting for the chance to gank with Teleport. After Rod of Ages is complete and you have Boots Liandry's Torment is next. It will give you nice damage to bully with and kill in teamfights. Sorcerer shoes and Rylais will follow to increase that potential. Then finish up with a ZZ'Rot Portal to help push lanes while your're away in addition to gaining more Armor, Magic resist and Move Speed. The minion Scaling with Health is a bonus too.
Finish up with Void Staff if they build resistance or Ludens echo if you need more speed for offensive situations. For defensive situations buy Zhonya's hourglass (with this it is easy to get caught) or Abyssal Scepter to finish the build.

Your Starsurge (Q) is your core ability which will be the lead for most of your kills and ganks. Max it first. Next is Celestial Expansion (W), this ability is useful to win trades but costs a lot to sustain so max it second. Comet of Legend (E) is useful to return to lane or engage in ganks late game, so use its passive at level 4 and wait to help your team later on. Next is Voice of Light (R). Keep this maxed all game and utilize the knockback for escapes or its slow value to secure kills.
While most will immediately go to Thunderlords, it limits Aurelion's potential substantially due to its cooldowns and single target burst nature. Deathfire Touch is better because it does small damage over time with no cooldown. This benefits Aurelion because he is at his core, a sustained damage champion with low burst capabilities.
In addition during teamfights and ganks this mastery will impact all who are hit by his surrounding stars, dealing significantly more damage to a team throughout a fights duration while Thunderlords is on cooldown.

I've chosen move speed quints because it works well with his (E) and (W). With E benefiting from flat Move Speed and W positioning becoming easier (especially when chasing down enemies). The ability to outrun your opponents both in ganks and in lane is extremely useful in Aurelion's kit, with most of my kills with Aurelion coming from my W consistently hitting a running foe.
Armor and Magic resist are essential to reap the most benefit from the health items that are the core of Aurelions build, especially in early game. Magic Penetration is useful against early itemization against you from sustain champions.
