Threats & Synergies
Avoid her W and try to get out of laning phase with equal farm. Play around your support's CC for potential all-ins but don't force as she can easily turn on you with superior range.
Due to the range difference this is your support's lane to win. Otherwise Q harass with your rend cs pattern to setup potential all-in's. With weak supports though she can zone you off CS.
Farming is your priority! Attempt to bait him to step up and Q him when he's ahead of the minions due to range nerfs of 8.4 can never AA trade. It is possible to kill him with a good support though they force Draven to drop his axes with CC or you have a large HP difference.
Skill match-up that comes down to you dodging his Q with passive and landing any harass you can on him. If you can land a Q into rend reset try and all in him immediately as he will finish two items and out DPS you. Punish his early game!
He will get greedy with 4th shot primed and often step out of place. Q him as punishment and trade around shot 1/2 backing off on 3/4. Similar to Draven it's a scary match-up if you don't get a lead or it goes late.
Rend reset while harassing her early till she's around 40% HP then proceed to all in her. Dodge W and don't be over confident or your mistakes/support mistakes will lead her to become hyper and 1v2. Once she gets rolling you're out-scaled.
To beat her keep your trades short and timed around the press the attack bonus damage. Then immediately disengage before she get's 3 hits off on you into a W to consume her passive. Because then she wins the trade. Her core item right now is Stormrazor which slows and reduces your DPS. She also goes invisible which will force you to miss your auto attack due to your passive. So be careful. Really easy to win lane lose game.
Make Kog'Ma scared of you then disengage once he Pops his W. Rend early if you must to make sure he can't get multiple free auto attacks off since HP swings can lose you the early game. Then re-engage with your support once his W wore off. Synergy with your support is key and thus why it's a harder lane in soloQ than it should be.
Farm till you reach your one item power-spike and then use your ultimate to engage into grabbing dragon. Another thing that prevents this early game bully from going to a Major threat or Extreme threat is your ability to dodge his Q by sidestepping with your passive. Play around him engaging on your support by forcing him to get antsy by staying out of his AA range. His dash is a 22 second CD as well so he's pretty easy to shut down believe it or not.
Farm till boots then tell your support to look for opportunities to engage. Assuming you have not eaten 3 double ups you should be healthy enough to just run her down. Just make sure you play around your support as she's immobile with a passive MS that will let her outkite if you played well combined with the E slow.
Dodge her Q and wait out her Spell Shield before rending. It's a straight forward match-up. When it gets later into the game use Blade of the Ruined King to pop her spell shield or rend early if you can land your Q with PTA active. Nuking her down to ~300 hp and a few auto attacks till she dies.
Play at a range in which she cannot engage on you with explosive shot unless she's diving you under tower. Once it's used all in her. Or better yet force her to engage your support then focus the Tristana while your support runs away.
Do not take elongated fights super early until you have an item lead as Twitch does surprisingly high amounts of damage with his poison instead focus on Press the Attack trades with a Q thrown in for good measure to keep him in check. Once you build up an HP lead and he falls below 40% hp look for the all in. 60% hp is fine if your support has hard CC.
Damage windows is the name of the game. Play passive till he uses a spell on your support or misses one before attempting to trade back into him. If you're uncomfortable with Kalista just play around your first back of berserker greaves before telling your support to look for opportunities to engage. Just be cautious of his E when using heal as the greavious wounds can easily lead towards a good fight going south.
Build an HP lead around rend resetting every time you can. If she tumbles backwards don't be afraid to aggressively take a stance to land your Q before rending and backing off. But under no circumstances trade a silver bolt proc without trading minimum Press the attack and Q back into her. Or she will slowly crawl back into the game.
Similar to kog'maw just a bit more deadly. Try and bait out her W then look to engage when it's down. Be vigilant and watch her feathers as to not eat a root and lose an early trade as she will be vicious if given the chance. Her major threat is in her safety and ability to deny you the right to get a lead so don't fear the idea of getting her low then pinging for dragon taking other objectives around the map to build an item lead. If she wastes ult immediately dive her under tower, kill her, and ult your support to drop tower aggro once she's dead.
Champion Build Guide
I'm a furry degenerate who primarily plays Kalista. Most would call it one tricking. I've been playing since Season 7 going from Katarina gold. To Season 8 a Kalista player since I was tired of being kited as Katarina by her, ended gold. And now Season 9 after getting used to Kalista and a million+ mastery points later got to platinum with her. I also stream though have taken a small hiatus due to real life things getting in the way temporarily. As of the new season looking forward to seeing how far I can push Kalista as this season I had 358 games played with a 62% winrate.
Feelings on the champion:
Nothing describes the Kalista roller coaster more than Riot Meddlers insight on Kalista...
"We've also put a lot of time into trying to close that gap on those three over the years, with mixed success, given some parts of those champions core identities are tied to the very elements that give them that variance in power by context. For a while, quite possibly a long while at that, we're going to be prioritizing most other champion work over closing that gap as a result. That means Azir, Kalista and Ryze will be balanced for their strong cases (organized play primarily), even if that leaves them quite weak in other contexts. It's not that we think that's the perfect solution, but that we think the time's better spent on other champions who haven't got that same degree of attention over the years and would benefit a lot from it.
If you're someone who likes those champs, but feels you shouldn't play them in solo queue, our apologies. I expect that feels pretty rough and that even if these champs are strong in the right circumstances that doesn't help if those circumstances aren't ones you personally experience. Completely agree there are downsides to this approach, we do think it's the best available trade off for LoL players as a whole though.
|Personally I feel Kalista is in a great spot minus the Stormrazor providing a slow which directly impacts her DPS via passive making movement speed slows = attack speed slows indirectly. So it's hard to break the habit of moving and instead afk in place to upkeep my DPS. Honestly a few quality of life buffs would be nice since there are now 3 bushes bot lane and invisibility on a large chunk of champions having my auto attacks not miss if I lose sight of them would feel pretty good. As senna gives anyone camouflage. Fix the bug that makes it where Kalista can cancel her auto attacks or on rare occasions her first auto attack will not throw a spear at all. The small things would add up. Otherwise I still love her kit and will continue to play her in this new season.|
The main reason I made this guide as oppose to some of the other ones on the Mobafire community it is not written from someone who has been playing since Season 1 and instead I'm a real player who struggled through the lower depths of ELO hell. Grinding and learning the role as ADC over the course of one season into the next and the guide is dedicated to those who look to follow suit. A few items would never be viable higher the ELO you go like Randuin's Omen though I will tell you it honestly works wonders when you have a support trolling you and a top laner that afk's on his island. So try it out and don't give up! Kalista is viable, not top tier like Kai'Sa but she is viable.
