Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
You can peel him off your carry but his engage on you can be deadly. Try not to waste your tornado against him in lane unless he already used his combo. He can set up a lot of crazy plays during his roams so make sure to pay attention to the map and try to match his roams.
Amumu
A recent patch made Amumu very annoying to play against by giving him charges on his Q thereby making him a viable pick. As long as you're weary of that level 1 you should be fine. Stay in your minions and poke him as much as you can.
Bard
You outrange Bard making trades with him not too bad if you can utilize bushes. Later on his roams are insane. If he leaves bot lane you should probably do that too so your team doesn't fall behind to him.
Blitzcrank
Very annoying to play against good Blitzcrank players. If he ever misses his hook you can bully him. Playing against him and doing this will help you get a feel for how long you can do that before he gets his hook back. Play in your minions and poke. If you have an Ezreal, let him play up, he can always escape Blitz Q instantly with his E. It makes this lane incredibly easy if you have an Ezreal.
Brand
Even bad Brand players are annoying to play against because of how much damage this champion does for no reason. If you have an aggressive adc it might be playable but otherwise just try to be as safe as you can and wait for ganks.
Braum
This champion isn't really a threat to Janna at all except if he lands his ult. You can play the entire lane phase in your minions poking him or his adc down. Try to find a lead before 6 and stay away from his minions. He can jump to them and if his passive is applied to you it's probably deadly if his adc follows up on it.
Galio
It's hard to completely negate a Galio's engage if you don't time your tornado correctly. Any time he wastes his dash you can poke him but don't path forward too much or he'll taunt you. His ult makes his presence off the map very daunting so try to pay attention to places where your team might be fighting and try to go there if you think he'll ult to them.
Gragas
This lane isn't too bad until level 6. You can interrupt his E with your tornado but if he ults you into him it's possibly deadly. Just try to disengage if he gets close to you. There's never a reason to frontline against this champion in fights if you're ahead, you will almost always die if he gets his engage off on you.
Karma
Her poke is really annoying so make sure to buy an early refill pot. Save your Q if she's really aggressive and goes for a tether on someone, you can force her to disengage by knocking her up to try to break the tether. She will Q minions to harass you so try to harass her when she uses her Q.
Leona
Pay attention to the 2v2. If she has a Samira (or any aggressive ADC) for example it's almost never worth overextending trades because of how low her cooldowns are. You can kind of interrupt her E with your tornado but once she's level 6 it's tricky to play against Leona. Focus on trying to outroam her and surviving lane phase.
Lulu
Her poke is worse than Karma AND she has a polymorph and an ult that will knock you up if you're close to whoever she casts it on. Try to utilize bushes against Lulu but don't take long trades.
Lux
A good Lux will never randomly throw her Q but instead hold it for pressure and focus on poking you down with her E. She's supposed to start Q, but if she doesn't you can utilize that and poke her level 1. Wait until she throws an ability to find out. Early vision of the middle lane bush will make playing against good Lux players a little less intimidating but always be weary of her Q.
Maokai
This is only really picked with something like Samira or Lucian because of how annoying the root is. Lane phase is really hard to play against him but you can almost certainly outroam him. Never extend too far into the lane to poke him. Wait for him to try to last hit a minion for his Relic shield and then maybe get a W on him if it's safe.
Morgana
Her bind and ult are annoying but, unlike Lux, her bind doesn't go through a minion making her not really a threat at all. Play in your minions and be cautious of her level 6. She can spellshield all of your disengage and just run at you with ult. Shurelya's and Nimbus Cloak rune are useful in this matchup.
Nami
Nami is usually the champion I recommend to people when they're trying to learn to be aggressive with enchanters. She's just that: an aggressive enchanter. She will almost always outtrade you if she knows what she's doing. It's mostly a skill matchup depending on if she can land bubble or not.
Nautilus
Believe it or not this is one of Janna's easier matchups. Exhaust isn't too bad here if you can reach his adc when he engages on your or your adc. However, once you're comfortable with this lane, you can be full on aggressive and take ignite and just poke him to death most of the time. Utilize your minion wave.
Pantheon
Depending on who his adc picked this lane can be either a nightmare or it can be pretty simple. Your Q interrupts his W though so don't waste it. It's a skill matchup but his champion falls off hard later.
Poppy
This really isn't picked that often in NA but be careful around walls for sure. Her CC combo is almost always deadly unless you took exhaust for their adc. You can poke her down pretty easily otherwise.
Pyke
This champion isn't very good. Respect his level 2 but then be very aggressive and utilize bushes or minions when he wastes his Q or E. Redemption is not a bad item against him to help negate his execute damage in fights. Your ult is also good for that.
Rakan
In lane be careful how you move. If you're moving too forward his W his very fast so you might not have enough time to stop his engage. In my experience, the knock up still goes through even if you Q him. Poke safely.
Rell
Janna's best matchup pretty much. You can disrupt her engage with your Q or your R so don't waste your tornado. You can poke her when she's off her horse but be careful for her remounting. Once you play this matchup you'll get a feel for how Janna can almost always win it.
Senna
You can trade with Senna in lane but you'll almost certainly want refill pot for it. Her auto Q is pretty annoying to play against but workable. Watch out for her W because it's pretty much the only way you'll get caught against her.
Seraphine
Skill matchup. Try not to get hit by her double E. Trade with her when she wastes it. Her ult is really useful in teamfights so play them slowly.
Sett
As long as you're positioned carefully he probably won't be in range to E you into him. If he runs at you just Q him. If he wastes his E you can poke him down.
Shaco
Annoying with his boxes. Mostly played by OTPs so they'll be clever with the boxes. An early Oracle's will be useful in this lane but pay attention when you're pushing if he disappears from lane. He might try to engage on you with boxes or his summoner spells (he likes to go exhaust + ignite).
Shen
Not really played in NA. Save your Q for when he gets too close to you to stop his taunt. Try to keep track of him at all times to attempt to disrupt him from ulting out of lane. If he does, ping his ult and ping danger.
Sona
Skill matchup. She can play very safely and scale up and be impossible to play against or she can die in lane and be useless. Healing reduction is not bad against her! Trades in lane are very even.
Soraka
Good Soraka players are very annoying. I recommend rushing Chemtech Putrifier and making sure you focus her down almost every time. Refill pot if she knows how to poke in lane. Try to dodge her Q as well as you can.
Swain
Skill matchup. If he can't hit his E he's not really useful. Poke him when he wastes it and build healing reduction second.
Taric
If his flash is up he might try to flash stun you but any time it's down he's pretty easy to poke down.
Thresh
Once you play against Thresh enough you'll learn what he does and what your limits are against him and it'll make lane phase a little easier. His lantern is very annoying but Janna can disrupt enemies by using Q or R on them as they take the lantern. Try not to die in lane phase.
Trundle
Depending on what his adc picks this could be a little harder for you. Try not to stand too close to a wall when he's near you or he'll pillar you into the wall and make you walk around the pillar. Boots of Swiftness will negate some of its slow.
Veigar
Skill matchup. If he wastes his cage ever try to utilize bush and poke. Don't extend trades too long however. You could wait for him to waste any of his abilities before poking him but cage is the most important one.
Vel'Koz
Good Vel'Koz players will never let you poke them basically. Let him be super aggressive and wait for ganks. Try to sustain as well as you can during that time.
Xerath
Similar to Brand and Vel'Koz, this champion will never let you poke him. Except he is the most annoying one to play against. If he lands his skillshots you won't be enjoying your lane at all. Buy a refillable potion ASAP and wait for ganks when he's pushed into your tower.
Yuumi
Depends on how good Yuumi is on the other team. If she has a hypercarry to sit on (Kindred, Evelynn) she can be impossible to play against. Taking Q level 1 and using it on her as she jumps out to get her passive will be very useful to you and might even kill her during lane phase.
Zac
You hard counter all of his engage with your tornado and your ult. Save them specifically for him.
Zyra
Her plants are annoying to play against but as long as your adc is taking them out when they spawn this lane isn't too bad for you. If she wastes E you can poke her pretty easily just be cautious of it otherwise.
Janna
Janna synergizes pretty well with just about every adc & apc. You can pick this champion into just about every lane and do well if you understand the matchup.
