During laning phase, you're not going to be able to keep up with a lot of high damage output. Like Illaoi with her tentacles, you're kind of useless without your ghouls or ult. That's kind of the whole point of this build: to make Yorick painful even without passive or ultimate aid. Focus on last hitting with your Q, conserve mana, E and pop ghouls when enemy champ gets aggressive. Conserve W for ganks or chasing. W is also devastating when they're trying to dive you.
You can only get so much gold from killing the same champ over and over, even with the new update. Try to rotate mid and take out the jungler on the way if you can.

Once you finish Trinity and Rageblade, you're pretty well set. Sterak's is going to help late game but it isn't exactly essential for pushing. Send your whole team to an objective (baron, drake, one of the side lanes) and hard push on the opposite side of the map. You can easily 1v1 anyone and they can't send their whole team for one kill with the other four of your team pushing.
