Veigar has the best stun in the game and high range on his spells, meaning you can position yourself safely away from the rest of their team in team fights. Of course against some opponents you will get caught more often (e.g. xin zhao, irelia). But with flash and stun (and in my case, ghost) escaping is pretty easy if you make clever use of choke points and cliffs. My elo is only 1300-1500 so maybe my opinions have less validity, but whenever I play Veigar I usually have ~2k HP at the end and generally don't have more than 4 deaths with a kpd of > 2 at least (usually > 4).
Also, RoA only gives 80 AP after the passive is maxed.
@nhilker --> lol, seriously? 95%? I don't know who you play against but that's impossible, even with having your stun and flash, you will get caught, and playing a champ with 1800 health is just stupid in my eyes. And for being a poor investment in AP, it gives 100 AP when maxed out on its passive, which is the same and Zhonya's, the only item that gives you more AP is Rabbadon's I think.
There is, the few extra seconds I get from that is just enough for either me to get out of ganks or finish their whole team without getting hurt. It's a small difference but it helps.
I agree with the above comments, I always prefer to get deathfire grasp as soon as possible. Even at low levels it's hard to deny its effectiveness.
I've never been a fan of rod of ages on Veigar seeing as how he has the ability to stay out of harms reach 95% of the time, but some players would appreciate the survivability I guess. As an investment in AP, rod of ages is a poor choice.
I think the biggest downfall to this guide is the late levels in dark matter... There really is no logical justification for maxing out your stun before it.
I know it's not in the base item setup but I do recommend going Deathfire Grasp late game
Why not grabbing it early? It gives you a base 200 damage as minumum which is basically a free Q in the lower levels
@thahood - Yes, his ulti gives him the advantage over AP carries, but not against other champions, for them you need the most AP you can get.
@keels - Mid game it provides cooldown reduction and mana, since my Q takes off a lot of their health I want to spam it as much as possible and farm it as well, for that I need both CD and mana regen. It's not expensive and it provides the side stats you need to be a great quick nuke.

Anyways, thanks for commenting :)
I also want to add that Veigar needs mid lane! Without it I find myself behind in levels and Veigar is a champ who starts living once he hits 6 and has his KABOOM ready. This is the reason why you want Veigar with the exp advantage over everyone else.
I also suggest getting flat cooldown reduction runes for glyphs.
You can check out my guide to get an idea how I like to play him.
Little sidenote, you stated that you will be ahead of other AP carries in the amount of AP. Veigar however doesn't care about that as his ultimate gives the advantage anyway.
Still good work, but I miss the optimalisation of going KABOOM as often as possible.
