Lane Phase
I keep my distance and poke with Q. I only ever auto attack if I think I can get away with it: if the enemy overextends or if we have a much bigger minion wave. You'll want to hide behind your minion wave most of the time, try to dodge skillshots, get your gold from poking, and stay alive.
Try to keep the river bush closest to your turret warded. Keep an eye on the map for the position of the enemy jungler and anyone else who might be missing. It's your job to notify your lane partner when you think a gank is coming. Also be mindful if your lane is roaming so you can notify your team.
You typically want to avoid all-in fights unless your team is ganking for you. In that case, you'll typically want to focus the weakest enemy champion, but sometimes proximity is more important. Remember their summoner spells: you might want to focus the one who's flashed recently, or the one who just has a smaller chance of escaping. Keep your team informed of who you're focusing, and watch who they're focusing as well. Sometimes you may need to switch targets if your team is unwilling.
Use W sparingly, and if you do use it, try to get maximum benefit out of it: the shield and the heal. Use it if your lane partner is low health and he's about to take some damage. Your E can help you escape ganks, and E power chord will help slow down enemies to secure your own ganks.
If the enemy support roams, you need to make a judgment call. Depending on the distance, you might want to follow and help your team with the enemy support, or you may want to push lane and get some turret damage, or try to kill the remaining enemy laner while he's alone.

Mid Game
After one of the outer bot turrets falls, your top laner might want to switch with you and your lane mate. In that case, bully their top laner and push for the turret. Remember to keep vision in both topside river bushes to defend against a collapse from the enemy team. You should have a couple of items and can be more liberal with your aura usage.
If you don't swap with top lane, you'll want to either push mid or start roaming top or with your jungler. If you push mid, basically play it as if you were top lane. Keep the sides of the mid lane warded and assist your mid laner. If nothing seems like it's going to happen mid, feel free to roam with your jungler, stop by top lane, or go wherever you feel like you'll be useful. Usually this is when the enemy laner is pushing heavily; this provides you the opportunity to collapse -- potentially with the help of your jungler -- for a nice gank.
During all of this, place wards in key spots in your jungle and the river, without overextending yourself. Remember that you're squishy. You might want to wait for a teammate before exploring even your own jungle. Also sweep and clear enemy wards.

Late Game
This is when Sona shines. You've got your core items. Your AP, mana, CDR, and health are looking nice. You can spam your auras fairly frequently. Encourage your team to group and fight as 4 or 5 as often as possible. Acquire vision with your team; don't run into the enemy jungle alone. Use power chords intelligently: Q is not always the best choice. Think about whether you need to reduce an enemy's damage to keep your teammate alive, or slow down an enemy so you can catch them as a team.
Don't overextend without vision or without your team. Save your R for critical moments. If your team is ready, a Flash+R might be an ideal engage. Otherwise, you might want to save it to disengage or to peel some of your other squishy teammates when the enemies engage you.
