Introduction

IMO: Yorick is by far one of the best designed bruisers, and if not one of the best designed champions in League of Legends. He can be very tanky, and he has a deceptive amount of lane sustain with his q. At the same time, he is one of the few champions that truly captures the idea of having an individual win condition/setup. For Yorick, his win condition is simply to get 3 or 4 graves. With these graves, Yorick can huge threat potential in lane, and the various ways he use the graves to influence the lane is simply extraordinary.

Much like his ghouls, the rest of Yorick's mechanics are deceptively simple, but have an extraordinary amount of depth. Yorick's w is an incredible form of cc that can alone force enemy flashes. If used expertly, it can even make or break teamfights by either peeling for your teammates or isolating specific enemies. In 1 v X, you can use your w to essentially snare an opponent for 4 WHOLE SECONDS, while you kite around them with your 175 attack range.

Meanwhile, Yorick's ultimate is STUPIDLY STRONG if you use it right. Summon it too early, and your lane opponent can just retreat and let the maiden run it down the lane. Summon it too late, as the ultimate has quite the delay, and the ultimate will have little impact in a fight. TIMING is the name of the game with Yorick's utlimate. You can also use the maiden to splitpush a lane and farm for you (little secret: you can also do the same thing with ghouls alone to cheese exp).

Pros / Cons

+ Strong laning phase
+ Ghoul + W mechanics allow him to outplay almost any champion
+ Strong split-push potential
- Does not scale nearly as effectively as other top laners for late game teamfights
- Can only carry games or be meaningful after the laning phase through good splipushing

Spells

Flash – Picked on almost every champion, so why not Yorick!

Exhaust – Gives Yorick some much needed peel for the late game teamfights + extra kill pressure to get first tower faster. Definitely pick Exhaust against easy or bursty champions (eg. Teemo, Yasuo, Jayce, Warwick, etc).

Teleport – The typical pick for most top laners, I would pick it depending on how comfortable I feel about the matchup and whether I might need to get more cs (eg. Fiora, Olaf, Mundo).

Ghost – If you're just picking up Yorick and you're not comfortable using your w to escape ganks, then I would take ghost to give Yorick better escape when you are splitpushing.

The Early Cheese

With Yorick, you want to win early. I have special cheese strat that get a good bit of damage onto your opponent very early into the lane. It takes 7 cs to get Yorick up to lvl 2. Your goal up until then is to get at least 3 graves (4 is loads better but it is rare if your opponent is also aggressive). As soon as you hit level 2, max e and try to land your e on your opponent before you summon your graves. THE ORDER IS IMPORTANT. If you summon your ghouls and miss your e, then your ghouls will end pushing the wave into your opponent's side, where your opponent will be able to easily freeze the lane.

This will be your main combo in lane. Once you learn your w, you can throw it into the combo only sometimes because of its huge mana cost and depending on the matchup (eg. camille, fiora).

However, sometimes, it is just better to hold to your graves, so can freeze the lane and still have huge threat potential over your opponent.

The EZ EXP

Before you leave any lane, try to summon ghouls, so that they can push the lane when you are gone and still give you exp and gold. This can occasionally have a powerfully impact on the game by also preventing the opponent from ever having winions and also allowing you to out exp your opponent.
