I just made my first guide. I was looking at other guides for some ideas when I noticed myself just not caring about half the stuff anyone posted in their guides. So I was wondering what most people actually want when they click on a guide?

Do they just want to see the item/skill build? Do they really care about the pros/cons? Do they want to know how to play the character?

I only play dominion. So there's really not much to a dominion champion guide...or maybe there is?

Here's my guide, it's basically a full rundown of the items. The skill build. Why I choose those items. Why I choose that skill build. How I use my combos.

What else would one "really like" to see in a guide, that way I can add it to this guide and any future guides I work on. Like I said, I don't think a "Comprehensive" guide is what everyone is looking for. I know I'm not. Too much reading, not enough playing...never a good thing! ;D

Well generally speaking guides that cover more aspects are rated higher.

In my review shop I have listed a bunch of stuff I like to see in a guide, check the chapter "Yikes, I need help!" :)

If it's a champion I've never played before I love a section that goes in depth on how to actually play the champion and the kind of style that goes best with the build. However, if it's a champion I've been playing for a long time I usually just look at the buy order.

Most people want to read some tips and tricks that only come from knowing the champion. They're always useful for new/old players.

In terms of information, I look especially love sections on play style and alternative builds. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people say a build has to be rigid, so try to mix in some alternative choices into a guide. Also, in terms of the text, make sure to run it through a grammar and spell check. Im generally more concerned with information than images & coding and the like, but having just a big word wall isn't very easy on the eyes. For your guide in particular I would try to streamline the build a bit, such as just doing the tier two and three items. For instance, instead of Dagger, Brawler's Gloves, Zeal, Dagger, and Cloak of Agility, into a Phantom Dancer, I would probably just say the Zeal and PD

Edited your post to remove the link, as I would consider this thread advertising when the link is there. As a thread it works without the link and is not breaking any rules.

Please read the Build and Guide Discussion rules: http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/forum/build-and-guide-discussion/topic-rules-read-me-first-3012

Personally, I just see if the cheat sheet seems legit, then I would have the morale to read the entire guide. What most people look for in guides is subject to debate however.

Well handled, Mowen.

@OP: I've always thought of it that the cheatsheet is there to teach people how to build (impatient readers), the explanations are there to teach people why to build that way (curious readers) and the gameplay sections along with the guide as a whole are there to teach people how to play the champion (dedicated readers).

If you want to write a good guide, you should try to please these three groups of people. The cheatsheet should be enough for people just looking for a build. You'll want to explain your choices so people understand why you recommend what you do. Adding alternatives, gameplay tips and other details will appeal to people interested enough to read the whole guide. There are a surprising amount of people that will read huge guides without complaint (helps to not have just a wall of text). Don't assume that everyone's looking for a cheatsheet and a couple paragraphs or you might find that your guide isn't as popular as you thought it'd be.

Don't make your guide any longer than it needs to be of course. If you can perfectly explain why to build The Bloodthirster on an AD carry in a couple sentences, then don't write three paragraphs about it. Get as much information into your guide in as efficiently as possible and you should end up with a pretty solid guide assuming your info is correct. I myself have written guides that are quite lengthy and constantly look for ways to remove redundant material, shorten explanations and reorganize my information to make it more clear. It's quite possible to have a great guide packed with information without it being super long.
