I'd say she is strongest top. She works mid but can lose a lot of lanes due to her need to be in melee to get combos off (and weaker in melee than melee mids like Kat), and her limited early game burst. A lot of standard mids can beat her, although she does seem to be effective versus melee mids like Kat, Kass etc. Top, she can constantly bully with her range and has effective escape from ganks, and since her AP scalings are pretty shabby, building her AP/tanky hybrid often works better for her than pure AP. If she were mid and built pure AP, she'd get downed instantly and be less useful than most APs late game; if she were mid and build AP/tanky, you wouldn't have a full AP. Which is why imo she is best top.
Jungle works too, she has super stupid games, but you get really gold starved and need quite a bit of gold on her. Gold items and getting successful ganks off often (not hard with her) helps a lot, though.

Elise is ******edly strong so much poke and her rappel allows for free tower diving. She isnt good mid because she doesnt win burst fights, she likes top because it's more sustained trades which her kit is built around.
So after 4 days of not playing and watching IPL5 instead, I'm back to solo queuing. Just 2 games tonight, was a little tired.

Game 1. Holy **** my back still hurts from this one. Laning against Rengar this game. It went pretty well, I was able to put a lot of pressure on him from the very start and zone him from cs. Meanwhile, our bottom lane gave up first blood to a Darius gank but Darius died as well, giving up his red buff.
What I didn't know was that red buff was the one he stole from our jungle, so assuming Darius had no red buff, I continued to play really aggressively without wards. Not much later, Darius showed up in my lane with a fresh red buff, killing me and setting me behind in the lane.
Despite that gank though I managed to come back and crush Rengar, picking up 2 kills early on in the lane and getting double his cs. My team was dying all over the place. At one point, the score was 2-13 with the 2 kills being my solo kills on Rengar.
Because Rengar was so far behind, I decided to start roaming. I told our jungler to come with me to bottom lane and right at that moment, our bottom lane gets ganked. Me and Olaf arrived on time to not only save our bot lane but give our Ezreal a triple kill. We picked up dragon and we were back. I continued roaming and picking up kills all around the map and eventually we became stronger, started winning fights and eventually won the game.
This was the hardest I've carried on Elise so far, pretty pleased with this game.
Game 2. Another lane against Rengar, this time without any pressure from the enemy jungle. We quickly picked up first blood top when Skarner came for an early red buff gank. From there, I was able to completely zone Rengar out and put him really far behind. Our bottom lane was getting camped by the enemy Amumu so like last game, I decided to go help them. We started towerdiving bottom lane with the 4 of us, while our Evelynn came down as well. The entire enemy team was ready for it and it ended up being a full on 5 on 5. The enemy Katarina picked up 2 kills on us, while the enemy Draven got another one, but meanwhile our Graves managed to clean house and get a quadra kill. The fight ended in a 4 for 3 exchange in our favor, with Graves and me left standing.
At that point, we were ahead by a decent amount. Evelynn continued to roam bottom and get nice and fed, but Katarina always picked up a straggler here and there, keeping her in the game.
We started teamfighting when we were a good amount of gold and kills ahead, with Rengar only having a Spirit Visage at 20 minutes in the game. I don't really know how, but when we got a decent Leona engage on them near Baron, we got completely wiped. Rengar somehow took out our fed Graves in mere seconds (with just a Spirit Visage) while Amumu and Katarina absolutely destroyed the rest of our team. Despite being ahead, our teamfighting was really poor and we kept losing teamfight after teamfight, eventually also losing us the game.
So in the end, I won the game that I should have lost and lost the game that I should have won.. - solo queue.
What did I learn? I need to learn how to play Rengar ._.
Elo still at 1750~, can't seem to win two games in a row >:l
aaand finally, my Elise stats so far:

So far she's only been banned in one game. I might just pick up Rengar for future games in case Elise gets banned.

Uh no...
Like Vapora said, you need a lot of gold to get your items quickly (rylai, abyssal, frozen heart, sunfire, GA, etc.) but you shouldn't build straight AP because her kit and scalings don't work as well with it as with other champs.

I'm probably gonna buy Elise when I get 1k more gold lul, you make her seem amazing.
1 question though, I saw you getting Doran's shields instead of Doran's Rings at least once, maybe more. Was this because your lane opponent was looking to be a tough enemy and you felt that you needed the tankiness, or does Elise just not have any mana problems in lane?
