But the cornerstone of your argument was that sustain/shields were better than damage. If that's the case, why is every popular support a strong early damage dealer with no sustain and no/minor shield?
Annie in particular being one of the top three or four supports right now, despite her being entirely focused on burst damage and CC.

But you said a few comments ago that supports like Leona and Thresh were good supports despite their lack of sustain. You're kind of contradicting yourself... Plus, any champion played half decently can "take advantage of enemy mistakes".
