i use it on everything
items, summoner spells, regular spells, even rumble ult because im insane
only thing I don't smartcast is wards (which for me is the number 5 slot)
I'd recommend smartcasting. It will suck at first, but force yourself to do it, it will make you a better player in the long run

I also smart cast everything besides Shyvana's ult (Am on the phone and don't remember ATM). I used to think it wasn't too helpful, but it has drastically helped my reaction time (Especially with my lag).
Dunno about wards though. I sometimes do and sometimes don't smart cast them. Probably because it is somewhat more reliable for me to not smart cast them for whatever reason.

Maybe you don't want to accidentally use up your ward on a useless spot and waste 75 or 125 gold. That's why I don't smart cast wards though. But on
Lee Sin, smart casting wards is very helpful.Overall smartcasting increases your reaction time, but you have to be familiar with the abilities' ranges. Accidentally casting an ability when you are just out of range can cost you a kill(s).

smartcasting just speeds up things, but can sometimes be inaccurate.
