I use the standard shift-button as smartcasting. Whenever you hold shift down and presses a spell, it casts at your current mouse location. If you want to cast the spell on yourself, hold down alt instead. This way you don't have to smartcast everything, such as things that needs aiming ( Trueshot Barrage, finales funkeln).

me too, I use smartcasting because it is quicker and easier rather than clicking everywhere

I use smartcasting always, though abilities that really depend on the correct range, such as using a Spinning Slash to cross a line of trees or using Flash.
It quickens up your gameplay so much.
I think that once people go smartcast, they rarely go back.
